How do I import/export emails from Outlook 2007 to Windows Live Mail?

    Hello

I am having trouble trying to find the best way to do this.

On one laptop I am using Outlook 2007 on Windows XP Professional and need to get the emails and contacts from here to my new laptop which is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, which uses Windows Live Mail.

What would be the best way to do this?

    Thanks very much

Hi sophi, welcome to 7F! :)

Have you already tried, what did you run into?

    EDIT:

Found this link that offers two solutions: https://social.technet.microsoft.com...ve-mail-client

I am using this guide How do I move my Outlook Express email from Windows XP to Windows 7?

And have got up to this bit

    "
Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and click Next.
In the next dialog - "Location of Messages" - click the Browse... button and navigate to the folder that has your Outlook Express messages that we saved or located above. This can once again be on external media, or directly on your machine. Simply locate the folder containing the infamous ".dbx" files. Click Next, make sure "All folders" is selected in the resulting dialog, and click Next again. WLM imports your email, after which you can click Finish."

I have got as far as 'simply locating the folder containing the .dbx files' and have clicked NEXT....only to get an error (I have attached a print screen)

If you could help, I would be very grateful!

My apologies life intervened, my neighbor needed a hand.

I'm getting the impression that the files you want to move are on an XP machine, and you want to move your email to Live mail on a 7 machine, correct?

Are these two machines on a network?

    Now about that message,
That message indicates that another program is open that uses those .dbx files and it looks like you have Outlook open in your screenshot.

Make sure all programs on the target machine that you want to import from are closed. Then try the import wizard in Live Mail again.

If you have both Outlook and live mail on one machine close all programs and only work with the live mail import wizard.

    Yes that is all correct.

I have closed everything on my target machine and now only have windows live mail open on the machine using windows 7. Have just tried to do the same thing and the message has come up again - oh no!

Won't be able to reply until Tuesday - thank you for your help so far and I will pick it up again then!

Okay, there are known difficulties in this type of transfer, you may want to explore the solutions I posed in my earlier edit: https://social.technet.microsoft.com...ve-mail-client

Leo's copyright on that article is from 2010, and my link is from March of this year.

Time has a way of figuring things out.

The first "checked as answer" looks promising, I checked the download for malware with Malwarebytes and it came up clean.

    Until Tuesday then.....

The steps in this thread may also help

Importing mail from Outlook to Windows Live Mail

    MailStore Home

This program also claims to preserve folder structure

Outlook Freeware - Export Messages to EML Format

That looks pretty good A Guy, it almost looks like the one I suggested in the link I posted above, but I can't tell if its from Mailstore or not because the poster has a 123dl.com address in the link.

123 seems to check out okay with google's safe browsing diagnostic page, but there's no link to get to 123's home page, so I would use your suggestion first. Thanks for the heads up!

Sophi, use A Guy's tip and install it on your old machine, Post #19: Importing mail from Outlook to Windows Live Mail then follow the instructions.

    Eeeek! We're almost there!

I have managed to transfer everything over that has been in folders.

I'm still struggling with doing just the inbox - is it something I need to do separately?

    Many many many thank yous!

Did you use the steps in my link or with A Guy's post? With the tutorial, MailStore or Outlook freeware?
It would help greatly if you could give us more details, we can guide you better if you let us know what you are using for the transfer.

If it was me, I would try to follow the prompts given during the steps. If either way allows multiple Folder moves, then try the transfer that way.

If either way only allows a single Folder transfer, then that is the way to go.
