Live.com Slow receipt of email and Outlook error.

    Hello ....

I have a client with a problem I cannot solve.

He is using Outlook in Office 2010 connecting to a Hotmail account via MAPI.

Sending and receiving email from Outlook creates the error 0x8004102A (Send/Receive Error).

Folders created either in Outlook or on Live.com are synced almost instantly so there appears to be no sync problem between his PC and the web.

However mail sent to the Hotmail address of my client can take up to half an hour or more to arrive in the Live.com inbox. When it does eventually arrive it syncs almost immediately with his PC reinforcing the view that the problem lies with Live.com.

What happens is that my client will receive clusters of emails at various intervals with nothing inbetween. Sending mail is fine - it is sent instantly and arrives as expected in good time. The problem appears to be the slowness of emails into the Live.com account.

This occurs with just one email or a number. It is NOT down to the amount of mail.

I hope I have explained this so it can be understood. I would welcome any suggestions or help to solve this problem. (M$ is of no help at all sadly)

    Many thanks

MS completed the migration of Hotmail accounts to Outlook.com accounts back in May

Take a look at this article explain how to migrate (written before MS auto migrated accounts), it might point you in the right direction: Move your Hotmail.com account to an Outlook.com account - TechRepublic

How are the servers configured in Outlook? You said: connected to Hotmail via MAPI.
Try connecting to Outlook.com via IMAP:
Use IMAP or POP E-Mail Programs
Set Up Outlook 2010 for IMAP or POP Access to Your E-Mail Account

The real problem is how long it takes for an email to hit Outlook.com (I refer to it as live to differentiate it from Outlook the program). If I send an email to my Hotmail account it hits it almost straight away. On my clients account it can take up to and sometimes beyond 30 minutes!

The sync between Outlook (the client) and Outlook.com works well. Its that delay before it hits Outlook.com that concerns me

The easiest thing to do is build a new server definitions in MSO Outlook for Outlook.com. When you set up the new account in MSO Outlook, you might have to manually edit the configuration. To test this, exclude the original Hotmail account in MSO Outlook and make the new OLcom (just a name I picked for the test account, it can be anything your client wants) the default.

See how this unraveling the Hotmail wires works. Most of the issues people see are because Hotmail used it's own proprietary protocol (I forget what they called it) and they had to support POP3, MAPI, and #3. Now Outlook.com only supports POP3 and IMAP (they might do behind the scenes protocol mapping which might be the cause of the slowness).

    IMAP Settings
    Account type: IMAP
    Incoming mail server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp-mail.outlook.com

    Logon Information:
User Name: your full outlook.com email address (LeftHand@outlook.com)
    Password: your outlook.com password

    “More Settings” button:
Outgoing Server tab: mark the box “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
and select “use same settings as my incoming mail server”.

Advanced tab – Server Port Numbers:
    Incoming server (IMAP): port 993
    – you must also mark the box “this server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
    Outgoing server (SMTP): port 587
    – you must also choose “TLS” for the option “Use the following types of encrypted connection”.

Its not really the connection between Outlook.com and MSO Outlook that is the issue. MSO Outlook will only syncwith what is on the server at Outlook.com. The mails are very slow to appear on Outlook.com - that is the real problem. Once they show there they sync fine with MSO Outlook.

    How are you testing this?

How do you determine the speed of Hotmail / Outlook.com? Can you log on to the web based Outlook.com, send a test message from your eMail to the Hotmail account and see if it arrives in the Outlook.com inbox relatively fast? There might be additional overhead on the server side before it is presented to MSO Outlook.

    Is this still an issue:

Please post image(s) of the Hotmail configuration on your client's MSO Outlook showing the information I supplied in a prior post (servers, ports, etc)
See: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
BEFORE posting the images REMOVE the eMail address (sometimes in the window title too).

Is your client using Outlook Hotmail Connector?

Most common connections nowadays are POP3 or IMAP.

Simply by sending an email and waiting for it to appear at his Outlook.com. As I said before sending an email to my Hotmail account - it appears on Outlook.com almost instantly. Sending to his from the same source there is quite a long wait before it appears. This is on the web - nothing to do with MSO Outlook.

It's the only way I know to test it.

As for the other issue I believe I have that under control thanks.

    Ok thanks.

You might try creating new secondary folders in MSO Outlook and move everything in the std folders to the secondary ones.
'Rcvd' -> move all Inbox items to the new folder.
'Sent2' -> move all Sent items to the new folder.
Those are the more important folders, but you could also do drafts, deleted, junk, etc...

Then BEFORE syncing - do the same on Outlook.com using the same folder names.

Other than that, I think you've covered the bases and you'll need Microsoft to address the issue on their servers.

Good luck, hopefully "cleaning" out the folders will help.

Unfortunately the offending folder appears to be the Deleted Items

11:20:19 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Sent Items'
11:20:19 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Deleted Items'
    11:20:19 Error Synchronizing Message
    Error: 1133
    Server Command: DELETE
    11:20:19 Server Id: CD29503C-26B1-11E3-919E-3C4A92E232C4
    11:20:19 Error with Send/Receive.
11:20:19 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Junk E-mail'
    11:20:19 Done

This is empty in both MSO Office AND on Outlook.com

    Ideas?

It might only be an initial error, does it happen every time?

In post 2 & 4 I suggested create a new Outlook.com account in Outlook, then in post I suggested cleaning out the folders (both Web client and Outlook).

A quick Google on the error 1133 gives a few other suggestions:
Export your block list and then delete all entries in it
Make sure that you are logged out of Outlook.com
Backup the MSO Outlook information and delete the Outlook.com account in MSO Outlook, then create a new account (pretty much what I said before except for the backup and delete)

It's easy to test - create a test account in MSO Outlook pointing to Outlook.com
configure the original account in MSO Outlook not to sync.
    Sync into the new account
If everything is swell, recreate any list (block / safe) and filters in the new account
use the new account going forward

You could import mail from the old account, but you could also import the problem if it is related to an eMail object. You should be able to access the eMail if reference is needed.

    These pages might help:
Repair the Connection to Your Account in Outlook
Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) - Outlook - Office.com
Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2013 not responding, hangs, freezes or stopped working

That really is all I have. Best of luck.

    Regards,

    Bill

One I just thought of, check for updates on the Outlook Hotmail Connector. I don't understand what purpose this serves, other than keeping old and proprietary protocols in place. People, in the long run, are better off using accepted standards, so consider post #2 and switch to IMAP.
