Default mail client not properly installed message in IE 11

I have several browsers installed, but use IE mostly.

Recently IE 11 has started this 'mail client not properly installed' nonsense in Win 7. I seem to have it worse than others in that multiple copies of IE appear and the error message won't go away after I have attempted to use a site's email link. The message reads: 'Could not perform this operation because the default mail client has not been properly installed'. The PC becomes unworkable and a reboot is required. I have done the suggested, but until now unnecessary, thing of actually telling Win 7 that WLM 2011 is my default mail client. Win 7 already knows this, but nevertheless this doesn't fix the chaos. Windows Task Manager struggles to remove the multiple copies of IE.

I have never seen this before and am wondering if a recent 'update' has caused this very serious situation. (I am keying this in Chrome by the way. It's OK but doesn't allow the Google search bar to be installed.)

Is there a fix or do I use another browser until hopefully an IE update fixes the problem?

Hi,
You might need to upgrade windows essentials to the 2012 version,
Or if the issue didn't occur using ie10 you can always roll back,
See what happens using clean boot,

Many thanks, TZ.

You got it in one. WLM 2012 did the trick. Strange, though, as WLM 2011 has previously given no problems on my PC and on my wife's. I will upgrade her WLM installation as well.

Your welcome and thanks for the update,
As new versions of Internet explorer are released there's always security changes,
Mail clients need to be updated as well to follow along those security lines,
I don't know if rolling back to ie10 would of helped because security updates usually apply to all version ie11-10-9 shown by the KB# on About Internet explorer popup page from the Gear symbol, showing now as KB2898785
Cheers.
