You might try logging in in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that works. If it does work, you know you have a conflict and could try a clean start to see if you can locate the conflict.

Malware can run in safe mode, but I think if anything, the malware would be gone, and you could be dealing with remnants. The people at Bleeping Computer are very good at what they do.
Are you having any other internet issues? Internet Explorer works correctly?

In a fit of "stuff it" I got out my external drive, backed up my files, used a recent system image I had made, then re installed the files.
Chrome now works, but of course I'm left with quite a bit to do.
Thanks folk for your advice. :)
BTW can the folders for Program Files and Program Files X86 in Windows old be safely used to reinstall applications on the system as it is now, or is it better to load them from new downloads?
