Windows Essentials keeps trying to update

    Hello.
For over a week now when i boot up pc i get a notifaction telling me an update for Windows Essential is available. It stays on my toolbar and if i click it starts to download Windows Essential 2012 and i then cancel it. I have windows live messenger and use hotmail/outlook but i have used a tweak to keep WLM working.
I did once try it and it removed WLM and started Skype and Onedrive so i did a system restore back to before it installed.
I think all this started about 20/2/2014 but it does not come from windows updates but when i start the pc up in the morning and sometimes again later in the day.
I have looked online about this and some people say its connected to Microsoft changing from Skydrive to Onedrive.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Vincent mate try going to updates and hiding it.
You do this by pulling up updates and in the list is to go just right click on that update within the listing and then pick "Hide" it won't pop up again.
You can do this with any updates that are annoying or not wanted.

Am I correct in saying that you don't have WLE installed/being used? That somehow a previous installation that was rolled back with system restore has left a remnant of WLE installed that is causing an updater to still run?

Try this Fixit first, see if it finds anything

Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled

You are in a tough position. Using a workaround to keep Messenger working, yet stuck with a corrupted install of WLE. Installing WLE and removing it with something like Revo Unisntaller may fix the WLE issue, but then Messenger would be gone again. Is it possible to just redo the Messenger work around after?

It is possible you can delete the WLE registry keys left over.

       Warning
If you are not comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt this

I would suggest having a complete system image before attempting this. At the least you'd want a complete registry backup.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

    Registry - Backup and Restore

Start> In search box type regedit> Enter> When registry editor opens navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SOFTWARE> Microsoft> Windows Live> Right click on Windows Live and select Delete> OK when asked if you want to delete the key and all of its subkeys

Again, if you are not backed up or uncomfortable using the registry editor, do not attempt. Removing these keys manually, rather then via the normal uninstaller method could have unforeseen consequences.

Yep A Guy is right on here to back up the registry - just in case you do the wrong thing see this
    Registry - Backup and Restore
I do this after every fresh install or if I am going to do something in the registry. It just means you can get deleted stuff back:)
I also save two copies one in Docs and the desktop - a bit over the top but I know if one goes bung then I have another copy.

A Guy. I have Windows Essential 2012 16.4.3508.0205 installed and use Windows Live Messenger. I used messenger reviver to keep messenger working.
All this was installed on 22/11/2013 as i done a clean Windows 7 install and the pc was ok until a week ago when this problem started.
I did try your advice about using microsoft support but no problems.
I think i saw a thread on here about somebody having the same issue and they were told it maybe to do with the changing from Skydrive to Onedrive and that you dont need to use Essentials update but just download the Onedrive app from Microsoft.
On the Microsoft community forum site there are a lot of posts on there about the same thing but no answers.

Ahhh, OK, I misunderstood when you said you did a system restore from before it installed. Do you have a System restore point from before this all began? You can click to see what programs will be affected.

    System Restore

Have you considered doing the WLE update, then reinstalling Messenger Reviver?

Use Messenger Reviver 2 to bring back Messenger

A Guy i did check to see were there any problems in windows update and none were listed as changing WLM.
Well i went ahead and done the update and i took away WLM so i re-downloaded again and a window pop-up said messenger out of date and press this button to update. I closed the pop-up and installed reviver and all was good until it said i am signed in at 2 places. I did have this problem when i done a clean install in November but i cant remember what i did to get rid of it.
Anyhow today i never got this message so maybe its working ok.
    Thanks for all your help.
