Hi WHS,
I made the small partition to test CD recovery and it worked great! had to browse for the external drive to find image and found it OK. will do some more practice on this to get familiar. sometimes I overthink stuff and can't get my head wrapped around it. Just a question about imaging Win7. It would be placed on HDD where XP is installed. Win7 is installed on a SSD. any issues with partition alignment I should watch for? I read something about that in the Help files.
Thanks again for your help and patience.

You can place the images anywhere. I suggest you predefine a folder to where you store it - else it goes into the root of the partition which is less convenient.

The alignment is preserved if you drag the image file into the SSD partition - see pic.

Hi WHS,
Sorry I haven't been back recently. Been looking online for a couple of days trying to find why the partition I made on the Data E: partition to image Win 7 came up as a logical drive. Didn't know if it made a difference or something I should be concerned with. Looking for answers was like going down a rabbit hole for a dummy like me. No simple or consistent answers that makes sense i.e. " four primary partitions | three + one extended partition = four partitions | extended partition with logical drive, etc." [Gack!!!] I created the new Image partition using Win7 disk management utility. Macrium reported the image was created successfully.
Any comments or suggestions please? Screenshots below.
Thank You.
