Lost all messages Windows Live Mail

Windows Live Mail did sync as periodically does, but this time all messages gone, all folders show 0. When I checked C:users/name/appdata/Microsoft/Windows Live Mail, there are 5 backups, one has time and date of the sync and loss of messages. I do not know how to restore this backup. It seems the restoration should be simple, but reading similar posts it appears to be a difficult process, help!

Click file ribbon-import messages. Choose the file you backed up to restore your messages. Simple as that.

    Lost email

Have tried all that, nothing. Backup file has data, shows downloading messages when importing, but after completed, no messages recovered in backup of WLM. Even Control-Y does not show any in tree.

Post a screen shot of the backup folders. I'd like to see what's in them (don't post anything that shows eMail address), I'm only interested in folder/file names.

You're using IMAP as the protocol - right?

Have you checked the web mail client of your mail provider(s) (Google, Yahoo, AOL...) - is the mail still on the server(s)?

Lost messages, have backup but cannot open via export

I am sorry, in C:\users\(name)\appdata\roaming\microsoft\Windows Live Mail. the backup for the date and time when lost files will not open, except for the folders within the folder. I can only give you the Properties of the Backup----Size: 1.43 MB: Size on disk: 2.04 MB; Contains 61 files, 18 Folders.

    I am using Popserver3

I checked with Oceanic Time Warner and they keep files for only 3 days, I verified that earlier.

    Thanks

So that's 5 backups, 61 files, 18 folders with a total size under 4 MB - is that correct?

This seems to be very small, but IMAP might work smarter than POP3 when storing information.

OTW only keeps files for three days. I'm guessing you are using the IMAP protocol then.
That sounds very strange - what if you're on vacation for two weeks and don't access your eMail? Do you lose it becasue of OTW 3 day policy?

I'd like you to try this.
Stop syncing the exisiting account in Windows Essentials Mail (Live Mail)
    - uncheck include this account on the 1st tab of the account options

Create a new eMail account in Windows Essentials Mail (Live Mail)
    - create this account using the same settings as the original account
    - sync this "new" account to the OTW server.

This will test if your data is still on the Server and can be sync'd to your client eMail.

Let me know how it turns out.

    Lost emails

I did as you said, made another email account, same settings, but did change to imap and change port. Got same messages as with my Pop3 account. I called Times Warner, and found I mistaken, they only delete messages in 3 days if I delete, otherwise 30 MB. The support person told me that my messages are not on server and it was WLM error during synching, deleting messages in all categories. He said only hope to retrieve is in Backup. Since I do have Backup with date/time as when I lost the email during synch, I suspect it in Backup but probably corrupted. When I tried to import the backup, it does show that files are being downloaded, but when I open, nothing there.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

See if there is a Recovered folder under Storage Folders

You imports might have worked, but the msgs went to a recovery folder instead of back to the original folder locations.

Thanks for the clarification and update on OTW - it makes more sense.

You can delete the "new" test account and change the old account back to be included in sync...

I'm still looking around, will post if anything relevant is found or remembered.

You could try recovery software such as Piriform Recuva
    Download Recuva
    Recuva features
    Recuva - Recover deleted emails
-I didn't know this... hmm, you learn something helping people all the time.

    Lost Messages

Thanks for your help. The messages were in the recovered messages, about 13 roots down, not sure why so many. I only wanted my "Keep" messages and they were good. When looked at Inbox and Sent, they were all corrupt. I still don't know how all messages ended up in recovery during the synch with 0 showing in original locations. Thanks again

Hey, that's great news.... I think

Your "keep" msgs are all good - that's good
Your inbox and sent msgs are corrupt - that's good?

No need for a detailed explanation as long as you got what you need.

13 roots down might be from the number of attempts to import - not sure.

The recovered folder has been around since Outlook Express - I don't like it. Must be one of those repressed memories I have :)

I would go back to using the POP account in WLM you originally used and change the options so that msgs are left on the server (mail account options > advanced tab > leave a copy of messages on the server

That way, you have an automatic backup going forward (at least until you hit the OTW 30 Mb limit).

When you're satisfied that the issue has been resolved, please mark the thread as Solved. Whle it's not certain what casued it, your lost msgs have been found ... I think

    Thanks Paul
