Just fixed mine as well - More than 4 weeks wasted plus a reload etc. I can't believe that Microsoft told me that I needed Outlook on the machine to make it work.
Thanks:

Just fixed it. Solution is: go to default program in control panel. choose "set program access and computer defaults". Choose custom. Next unselect "use current web browser" and select ie8. Do same for email. Click apply and it's fixed.
Thanks! Really irritating that features don't work when using the browser and mail app that is standard for Windows 7. Glad you posted this!
searched for a long time. solved the problem. had been working ok for a week on w7 64. have no idea what screwed it up! thanx jj.

I fixed the problem! Go to control panel anf click on uninstall, then on windows mail live. Click on repair, after its through repairing it will ask you to reboot. After you rebbot go to windows live mail and it will ask you if you want to make it your default email handler. Select yes and your on your way. Before this I read all the forums and tried everything. This is the only thing that worked for me.

the jjthenovice solution "go to default program in control panel. choose "set program access and computer defaults". Choose custom. Next unselect "use current web browser" and select ie8. Do same for email..." works for me for a few hours, days, or even weeks, then i have to do it again. anyone else finding that?
