Inconsistent keyboard input in Firefox vs Internet Explorer
I have been doing a lot of work on Google Sheets over the past few months. I tend to use Internet Explorer 11 ( IE ) more for this as the copy and paste works much better. Recently though I found that when I try to type characters or numbers into a cell, nothing happens. If I double click on the cell, it accepts input. In Firefox 28 (FF), it works just fine.
Today, I was entering a formula in the sheet using IE and I kept getting a parse error. It would not accept my formula as typed. So, I copied the formula from another working cell and still got an error. The formula was along the lines of =HYPERLINK("TARGET-URL","TARGET NAME"). Then I got to thinking that, way back in elementary school, opening quotation marks are different from closing quotation marks and wondered if that had any bearing on the problem. The keyboard only has one quotation mark key. I'm not sure if I've seen one that has two. (Mine is a Microsoft keyboard.) So, I opened the spreadsheet in FF, backspaced over each quotation mark and then immediately typed each one back in. The formula worked !
So, I can only figure that somehow FF interprets the " keystroke differently than IE. The questions are why and how can this be fixed ?
