Windows 7: IE 11 Temporary Internet File corrupted and cannot fix

Thrash - thx for the link. I've downloaded the Win7 ultimate x64 image and will run the update/repair tomorrow, following the steps provided by Win7 forum. I'm now realizing that there is more damage done - sfc cannot fix corrupt files, there is 1000+ registry errors, and I'm getting a nag window from MS saying I don't have a legit copy. I'm thinking that there were problems before I did the clone, but it's now a mess - so live and learn.

This sounds like it may be a permissions issue -

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

ICACLS %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
ICACLS "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files"

Post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Also,
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Noel, although the two commands you provided ran, once I submitted the full path (the commands failed if I used %userprofile%) the problems remain. Also, I tried putting in the correct license key, but it's not updating properly and although it states Win7 is activated, I still get warning messages that I do not have a proper copy of Win 7.

Unless you can provide any other work around, I'm going to have to restore Win7. What a pain. This should have been a no-brainer process.

if %userprofile% fails then you may have Environment Variable problems - or it could confirm the permissions issue.

Let's try these commands...
In an Elevated Command Prompt, run the following commands...

DIR %userprofile%
ICACLS %userprofile%
ICACLS %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
ICACLS "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files"

Please post the results - whether it works or not - as the exact error messages may indicate the source of the problem.

Noel, thx for the terrific help. Yes, it is probably a permission issue, but with MS nagging me every few minutes that I don't have an authorized version, I've decided to run the Reinstall. I did remove some programs as directed and I'm now currently in step 2. I will let you know how things go.

Again thx.

Update - I had to install a new instance of Win7 because when I tried to update the existing instance, it would reach a point in the install and then abort with a "computer not compatible" error message

Seems that when I cloned Win7 from a HD to a SSD, Win7 got confused. The new instance correctly identifies the SSD and sets the proper configuration. Lesson learned: cloning only works with the same drive configuration.

Cheers.

Thrash, no I didn't beforehand, but now that I have, I understand that my assumption regarding a switch from HD to SSD was not a simple matter. But right now, Win 7 is operating perfectly, and my experience score for the SSDs is 7.7 - LOL that's higher than my score for my processor and memory (both are 7.2). And IE11 and Outlook work flawlessly.

Nevertheless, I'm interested in two things: TRIM and the sector issue. In the device manager, my SSDs are listed as ATA devices. Is there anyway to verify that TRIM is working properly. I know I'm not supposed to defrag a SSD, but TRIM seems to help maintain SSD performance. As for the sector issue, as long as the performance holds, I'm happy.

BTW, I want to say THANK YOU for your expect assistance and kudos to Noel as well. I'm newly retired from the IT world (30 years of IT Support as a government contractor in DC) and the last 6 years was in a MS shop supporting big Dot.Net apps. I recently bought a fancy dell All-In-One 23 touchscreen Win8.1 PC, as well as the Surface 3 - the Dell is frankly a disappointment, but the Surface is awesome. I do a lot of photo editing using Photoshop, and my HP running Win7 is still the best option until Win9. With the addition of the SSDs, the performance is terrific.

This is a great site - thanks to all.
