A virus clobbered IE 11 and I can't reinstall it.

IE 11 was trashed after a virus infection.
I succeeded in getting most of my windows functionality and all my files and shortcuts back but IE 11 is a problem.
I followed instructions here to uninstall IE 11 and then tried to use "IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe" for a reinstall.
Reinstall fails with the following message window:
"Internet Explorer did not finish installing.
Setup can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer."

When I start the "iexplorer" program, there's a long pause and a blank IE window opens with "Your last browsing session closed unexpectedly" with a "Restore session" button.
Clicking on the button just makes it hang.
Plus none of the IE toolbar buttons appear at the top of the page. A right mouse click doesn't bring anything up.

I'm using FireFox as a temporary browser but want my IE back.

I know other stuff must be fragged as well since I've tried to use the Windows "Help and Support" screens from the program start menu, and nothing comes up. I get a bar with a blue "loading" indicator with "Getting help content..." above the bar. The help files appear to be gone.

    Can you help me out?
I'm a retired mainframe programmer/analyst and really can't afford to send this out to be fixed.

    My appreciation in advance!

    Welcome to the forum cfmolt.

If you are sure the infection is gone and the damage it caused hasn't been fixed I would suggest a Repair and Install. It will probably be the quickest to solve the many problems you have.
