Are you sure you want to leave this page? - popup

Not sure where to put this question because I am not sure what is causing it!!! Win 7 Pro machine, 64bit. User will suddenly get this pop-up (shown) and sometimes will also hear some audio that sounds like a radio broadcast (huh?). I know it sounds crazy but I actually witnessed it happen once. All she had open was a work program, Outlook and Skype. No IE sessions at all and I did not see the iexplorer process present in task manager. Malwarebytes scans clean and the laptop is running Symantec Endpoint v12.

Clicking leave this page or Stay on this page will cause the dialog box to close, but nothing else will happen. Sometimes the dialog box comes back shortly after, sometimes it does not. Help!

Process Explorer should be able to tell you which process is creating that dialog box.

Drag/drop the icon shown in the screenshot below onto the dialog box.

Process Explorer should then highlight the app that created the dialog box.

I sometimes get the same prompt on Facebook, which, like all my browsing, I access via Firefox. My PC is HP Compaq 6200 running Windows 7 pro. Usually I check that I've finished what I was doing, then close the Facebook page..

You see a dialog box with the title of Windows Internet Explorer when using Firefox? That is strange.

The original post states that no IE processes were running according to Task Manager. That is strange.

If you get a popup similar* to the screenshot shown in the original post, but you know that you still have Firefox open, then that is not odd at all. Annoying, but not odd.

*hopefully, your popup has Firefox in the title of the dialog box.

This behaviour WindowEventHandlers.onbeforeunload is controlled from a website, not a browser. If the popup is coming up it's because each individual website has to decide when these things come up, and it can be triggered by just visiting a page on a website.
Years ago browsers couldn't handle these as efficiently as they do now, and it caused the infamous twenty clicks before you realized you had to close the browser to get rid of it, it's harmless, but annoying.

Its main function is to warn the visitor (rather crudely) from leaving the page by accident in case there is some type of input like filling out an order form that is left incomplete, it could happen if someone makes a one character keyboard entry then changes their mind and wants to leave the page to check on something else.
Even though there was no browser(s) open I would look to Outlook and Skype, as they can be connected to the internet without a browser I'm not sure about the work program, unless she works from home. I'm thinking Skype mostly, couldn't it have music depending on what connection there was?

This article describes mitigation in Firefox and Chrome: http://Are you sure you want to leave this page? How to escape websites... | www.pcadvisor.co.uk, but IE is a different animal, you may find relief if you go to Tools\Internet Options\Privacy tab\ and turn on the pop-up blocker, check the settings button, from there you can add or remove sites, change notifications, and change the level of blocking.
