Cursor moves to left in Firefox(and some others), cause?

I have had this issue two times now- once a few months ago, and again tonight. I don't know the cause or why this is a primarily Firefox issue, though this will happen in select other text fields in Windows, just not the common ones such as Notepad, OpenOffice or even the folder location bar or search box. It may be the mouse or keyboard, but since this is a mostly Firefox issue I'm posting here.

In both instances, the mouse would start to behave funny in Firefox. Clicking the arrow in the URL bar would act like a double click. Clicking in the URL bar or a text field would act as if the arrow key was being held down left, causing the cursor to move back rapidly when typing or attempting to select text. Attempting to click the menu bar would do the same left scrolling trick. This made Firefox unusable. I could access certain menu choices by moving the cursor down into them but even so, navigating those submenu options was hard. I could not even clear cache because the menu would go to the leftmost window. Typing anything in FF required copying from Notepad.

Again, this did not happen in Notepad or other text programs, the search box, IE or most other programs, but last time this happened I did find 1 or 2 other programs that suffered this so this may not be 100% Firefox.

I do not remember how I fixed this the last time, though I recall the issue persisted after a restart in the prior case. Tonight I shut down, unplugged and rearranged all USB cords in the back and restarted, which fixed the issue- though Windows took a long time reinstalling the drivers for the keyboard(which seems odd because they keyboard worked even during that period). Maybe the keyboard has a fault? Both times also happened after using this 5-button HP mouse, so it could also be the cause somehow, though why it only affects FF and 1 or 2 others but not Notepad, IE, etc, I have no idea.

I've ruled out malware as the cause in both cases. Firefox safe mode didn't fix it and being that it did show up in non-FF programs before it's probably not a browser issue(but without knowing what it is I'm posting here since it's the primarily affected program). I do want to get input on this though, to maybe root out the cause.
