Firefox bookmarks are not where they should be??

First of all, I'm running windows 7 pro 64bit, with the latest version of firefox installed.

This has got me stumped. In xp I had a program set to regularly backup my firefox profiles folder. The most important file in this folder was (and still is) bookmarks.html.

Since I moved to windows 7 I've had the following small problem (to save anybody wasting time telling me things I already know, I am aware of exporting bookmarks from the bookmarks menu, and I also know about mozbackup, but I like the mozilla profile backup to run along with all my other automated backups).

I have googled all over the place about this, and I know that bookmarks.html is meant to be in

    C:\Users\ME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\"random_numbered_folder".default, but it is not.

There is an out of date bookmarks html folder in there (the entries are not what I currently have in firefox bookmarks). It's obviously not where firefox is getting the bookmarks from, as I shut down firefox, moved the file to desktop so that there was no bookmarks.html in the profiles folder, and restarted firefox.

When I restarted firefox all my bookmarks were there exactly as they should be.

I've searched the C drive to death but I cannot find out where the current bookmarks.html is.

Can anyone shed some light on this.

    Many thanks for any replies.

    Bookmarks are stored in:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XXXXXXXX\places.sqlite

In the same folder, you will see a bookmarkbackups folder. Inside there, you will see backups of your bookmarks that can be imported back into firefox.

The .json file with the most recent date is your current bookmark backup file.

The bookmarks.html file doesn't store bookmarks itself and never has, so if you were backing that up, you weren't getting anything. The contents of bookmarks.html are shown below for reference:

I'm baffled by this as well. I always used bookmarks.html.

Now I"m using Windows 7 and amd trying to force Opera to import the correct html file. It can't because
it appears the geni at Mozilla stopped using the HTML file and never told me.

So this is an extension question. How the hell do convert to a standard bookmark.html so one can import
    to Opera?

Crhist. It used to be simple and I swear the poster above has me confused to hell and back. Last time I was in XP.. a few weeks ago.. I could rely on finding the bookmark.html in profiles to use as import to other programs etc.
    My eyes are bleeding.

Hi! Some info might help me understand:

Click the start button and type: firefox.exe -profilemanager

How many profiles are there? If you select "Create a new profile", you can follow the file path to see where the default profile is being stored.

Click Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks. Can you export your current bookmarks to a html file at the location of your choice?

    Cheers!

Right Ok. Thanks for your replies. At least I now now what folder to backup to keep my bookmarks (and everything else).

Seems they made it more complicated though. Back on xp the current bookmarks were stored in bookmarks.html.

But I am used to this new way already, so no worries.

Perhaps more complicated, but for a good reason, namely that a fair number of users were finding that their bookmarks were being corrupted, hence the change to a more stable system.

Thanks for explaining. I didn't realise there was a corruption issue.
