2 copies IE8 created when upgraded to WIN7

    Hi

Hope one of you clever bods on here can help me as I'm at a loss what to do.

I recently bought a new Dell machine just before Win 7 was released so it came with Vista. I have not yet installed any other software on the machine other than what it came with. I bought a standalone copy of Win 7 to upgrade from Vista but when I install as an upgrade on my machine I get 2 copies of IE8 appearing in the programs menu listed as:

    Internet Explorer
    Internet Explorer (64bit)

They both will run independantly but I am worried about the future stability of my system and really don't want them both on there.

I tried to Google to find anyone else with the same problem, but the only references I can find are to hackers who for some reason actually want to have two copies running. I do not know why I seem to be the only person with this problem.

I presume that I need to uninstall one of them - can anyone advise which one please and how to do it - my pc IS 64 bit by the way and I used the Win 7 64 bit CD to do the upgrade. I tried a factory reset of the machine and tried to upgrade to Win 7 a second time to check i was doing everything correctly but the same thing has happened.

Also, under control panel I seem to have 2 copies of Java:

Java (TM) 6 update 13 and
    Java (TM) 6 update 13 (64-bit).

Is this the same issue - which one should I delete please and how?

    Many thanks!

You prob did an upgrade. Do a clean install, reinstall all your programs, make a system image and you will be all set. Do a clean install which is always the best way, and you will good as gold.

I thought I was missing something but I guess not.

Anyways, this is NOT an issue, you have nothing to worry about. You have two copies of each of those programs because one copy is 32-bit and one is 64-bit.

You should upgrade your Java as well, they are at Java 6, Update 17 right now.

    How is that a problem?

If you have 64 bit, you're supposed to have 2 IE's. 64 bit has 2 program file folders, one is Program Files and one is Program Files (x86). The Program Files is for 64 bit applications, the other for 32 bit (86) applications.

You can, but you don't really need to run the 64 bit IE, the 32 bit one is the one used by default. Don't delete it though, no need to at all.

Plus having a 32 bit and 64 bit Java is absolutely nothing to be concerned about either. You can get rid of the 64 bit one if you never use a 64 bit browser, but it's fine to have both installed at the same time.

And update your Java for security reasons, latest is Java 6 update 17.

Ah - so they are both meant to be there - many thanks! Sorry it wasn't obvious to me - I have not used a 64 bit machine before so didn't expect it to carry a 32 bit version of IE as well as a 64 bit. I've just been reading that the 32 bit version is needed to run Adobe Flash etc!

Yes the Java is out of date because I just did a fresh factory reset & I guess 13 was the latest update that came with it. I've got to install updates for many other things yet including Windows itself - just wanted to make sure I had the the right software & versions on there before I went about updating everything. Just taken Dell's imposed Norton off so that I can put my own antivirus on too - much to do yet to complete the setup.

    Thanks for your help guys!
