    Timeout in Thunderbird

I have Windows 7 64 bit, HP laptop, with an internal modem(I'm on dialup). Thunderbird shows that everything was setup successfully, but when I try to get mail, I get the message: "Connection to server "--------" timed out. Things I've tried were going into config editor and changing values in "network.ftp.idle.ConnectionTimeout" and in "mailnew.tcptimeout"; I did these one at a time and that didn't work. Tried using Thunderbird support and got a message: "How much are you willing to pay for the answer?" I left.
I should also mention; that when I tried setting up the same mail account in Windows Live Mail, (which also said it setup correctly), I got socket errors when trying to get mail.
Any other things I could try?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Have you tried asking on MozillaZine, which does not charge for assisting others? (I'd have posted any relevant KnowledgeBase articles, but that site is being overly slow again today, and you may encounter MozillaZine delays as well.)

Timeouts of the nature you are encountering are usually network problems, not TB-related ones, but it won't hurt to ask in the TB Support forum, which does not require registration, and they may be caused by such things as telling TB to use improper security settings.

(That you also encountered problems in using Windows Live Mail tells me that you do have one or more [or perhaps umpteen gazillion...] setup problems somewhere.)

If you can receive but not send, I would suggest that you check your setting, shown in accounts; ports, ssl, etc. Usually when this occurs, it may be that your ISP does not allow you to send via your email account (if not using your ISP email). If this is the case you have to set your setting port etc pursuant to the instructions given by your ISP and not the email service.

Sorry for the lack of replies. It hasn't been handled yet. I've been having some 'username/password' hassles getting into MozillaZine; and as far as the ports, SSL; Ive talked with my ISP and the port numbers are the defaults shown when I setup and all the other boxes remain unchecked. For now, I've just been logging into my ISP's website and checking my mail there. I do get mail from my gmail account; that one set up fine in Windows Live Mail. I guess I'll register with a different email address in MozillaZine(I never heard back from the Administrator that I emailed); and post on their forum. Oh, and as far as Thunderbird support; I found out that there is a forum: the place I posted my problem, was in the "Ask a question" on that support page(that was the 'pay one').
