Type services in search. Go to the service in question, set to on and automatic.

Go to search, by startup menu. In search type the word services. You will be presented with the service menu. In that menu search for the service .net service. Look at it, if it is off turn it on. If it is set to manual set to automatic. Then hit apply. Then see if your messenger works.

Try it this way. Go to help (in start menu) type start services go to system services then go to change current state of services. If you get that far you should see the service in question.

There is an easy solution for this problem in the link below from Microsoft.
Messenger problems: Resolving sign-in error 80072ef3 | mynetx – Windows Live Enhanced

Other solutions like this one are all over the internet.
I solved it by double clicking on the time
(bottom right), then click on the 'internet time' tab, then click on 'update
now' button........... now wait for it to update (it will tell you!) then
once finished click apply or ok!

you may have to turn your internet off to do this and restart to take affect!
