can't open .mpg files in IE 8

After first installing Win 7 I could open .mpg or .wav files that were links on web pages. If I clicked on such links Windows media player would play the video file. Now when I click on such links I get the error screen that the page can't be opened. I haven't added any add ons and a reset of IE 8 changed nothing. Windows Media player is set as the default player for such files and up until a day or so ago when I clicked on such links Media player would play them.

You may try restoring from a Restore Point. System Restore
Hope this helps.
