IE8 "cannot display web page" only for hotmail/live.com

I can view other sites in IE8, and I can view hotmail and live.com in firefox, but keep getting this error on hotmail and live.com in IE8 (final) "cannot dispaly web page".

Tried resetting and restarting IE8, same issue.

yes, IE8 is default browser. Already went through most of the steps recommended in MS online help for this issue. But since Firefox browser is getting to live.com, I don't think it's networking or ISP issue. Seems like something configured in IE, it thinks it's a networking issue.

Perhaps your hosts file has been altered, maybe by some malware.

Please type in start - search:

    notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and post here the contents of the file that opens

Edit: I just noticed you can open the above pages using firefox , so I guess this is not the problem...

Try deleting cookies, temporary internet files, forms (delete all) under IE8 Internet Options, if you haven't done this already.

that solved it. thanks. had tried that before but the top checkbox in the IE dialog to Delete Browsing History is on by default and I hadn't unchecked it. I had to uncheck that one and check the others. Then it worked.
