What kind of modem do you have? Is your Ethernet adapter disabled? Check in Device manager to see if it is disabled. Under Network Adapters it will be listed as a Network Connection.

Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. Look and see if you have a red X by Local Area Connection with your Ethernet Cable plugged into the modem and your computer.
