    Windows 7 corrupting downloaded files

Hi. I'm currently using RC1 with all the updates, and when I download files from anywhere often they are corrupted. When I transfer my work from uni to home I use .rar files or .zip files, often they wont extract saying the volumes are corrupted. Though if I download them on my vista machine they are fine

Anyone any idea what could be causing this?

Hi Myke, welcome to the forums.

Are you using the same version of compression software on both machines uni & home? An incompatability with certain software/versions can cause issues with compressed files.

Yeah, it's just WinRAR, WinZip or WinAce. They all say the same thing, often if I redownload the file it works fine. It's not every file that does it just every now and again. I can't understand it at all. I'm unsure if its every file I download or just the rars - it's hard to test

I have noticed that many time on Win7 the download hangs for a bit at 99% or even 100% - wait until the open folder now shows. it takes more time it seems to move from the temp directory to the actual directory - Torrents, and such are really bad about this. also many other P2P sites are bad at this. My solutions to fix or partly fix this was insure the TEMP files for Win7 are not on the same partitions that Vista uses.
I have had NO PROBLEMS WITH IE 8, and FTP or HTTP sites doing this.
I also increased by pages from 10 to 20, this helped big time. I also use:
    Code:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
reason: normal: Allow the receive window to grow to
accomodate almost all scenarios. while I have seen many sites recommend the disable. (try it you might like it)

Thanks for your reply. I only have 1 partition on my hdd and its Windows 7, I have noticed the hang though its very strange, I've tried downloading using many different applications which give the same result. DTa, Firefox, google chrome, IE and flashget. I'm not sure what you mean by changing pages or the netsh command, can you explain more?

    Thanks again

    1. start --> cmd (right click run as admin)
    type or copy paste
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
    enter
that sets your netsh to better than default which allow it to grow, it does help on really big files.
    2. right click computer on desktop
    3. open properties
    4. system properties
    5. advanced
    6. enviroment variables
    7. make sure TMP and TEMP are owned by YOU.
    should read something like this:
    Code:
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp
    Code:
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Tmp
this will enable your tcp setting to grow to accomodate and the rest makes sure you have ownership of the temp files... without ownership it is very HARD to save files. that is where they are stored when you download them, they are then assembled and transferred to you indicated directory.

Thanks for the reply, I've tried the netsh command - will wait and see on the results. However the temp files are listed where you said, not sure if they are owned by me but in the scroll menu it lists their username as 'System'

Myke, when installing the RC, did you format the partition with win 7? during setup? if not then this is a problem. If that isnt the case, then i would highly recommend you doing a thorough test on your HDD's. I ran into the same exact problem when i first installed beta, and didnt use win 7 to format, used XP to format the partition and just straight installed 7 onto it. Also found that i had a few bad sectors on that same HDD.

XP Vista and Win7 all format the same way NTFS. that should not be a problem. I would recommend you clean HDD via my computer, open boot drive RC-> properties -> clean. then open tools -> check Error check,
then reboot and when ask, do full check. bad sectors and cross -linked files. Do complete DEFRAG, then start your install. Default pages are set to 10. Vista and Win7 are the same that way.

snuffy, if you search the forum for a thread called corrupt disk, you will see the discussion about this particular topic. This was a similar problem back when whistler first came out in testing days.
