Location not available: Desktop

Same thing happens with other accounts. After logging off and logging back on it goes back to normal, but every time I restart it reverts back to classic windows theme and says the desktop is not accessible.

Maybe totally off here, but is your system time set correctly?

My system time is set correctly. As to the recovery disks question, my computer came with no disks at all. I'm not sure how to make a recovery disk, I don't know where to get the Window 7 ISO from. I was thinking that, since my computer didn't come with disks, maybe I'm supposed to get it from Best Buy, where I bought the computer, or Sony? My computer is a Sony Vaio VPCCW17FX.

As to the recovery partition, I'm not sure what you mean.

I talked to Sony, and they said that instead of a Windows Installation DVD coming with the computer, the files needed to do a recovery are already installed on the computer. Going into "Vaio Care" and clicking the "Recovery and Restore" button, I get a number of options; "Restore Windows," "Install Applications and Drivers," "Create a Recovery Disk," and "Recover Computer."

Using the "Create a Recovery Disk" option, I did just that; created a recovery disk. Is this the disk that I need to do the repair install? I believe that is what you meant by recovery partition right?

So I made the discs and tried to do the repair install. It didn't work! The "Vaio Care" program, where I'm supposed to run all of these things through no longer opens now. When I try to open it or put a disk in I immediately get a message saying "Vaio Care has stopped working"

After trying the restore disks, I was going to try the "Install Applications and Drivers" option, but now I can't even open Vaio Care. Don't know what to do anymore!

At this point, I would try restarting your computer and repeatedly pressing the f8 key, then doing a full system recovery from the restore partition.
