System Service Exception (0x3b) when starting games from Steam...

    Hi all.

This is my very first post on these forums. I have tried searching for a solution to my problem, and persistent 'googling' led me to this site.

    Here is my issue...

From the 27/07/10, I have mysteriously started getting this 'SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION' BSOD whenever I attempt to start a game from the Steam UI. It doesn't occur every single time, and not with every game. It is entirely random at that point, but it does happen only when I attempt to launch a game from the UI. Most times, I can reboot and restart the same game from Steam again, and it runs fine.

I used a small app called 'Bluescreenview' and it identified a driver file: win32k.sys, and ntoskrnl.exe as the culprits. Beyond this however, I cannot identify what app or process is causing the BSOD.

    System specs are as follows:

    CPU:Intel Core i7 920
    MB: MSI X58-Pro
    RAM: 3 x 2GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600
GPU: 2 x [Sapphire] ATI Radeon 5850 (CrossfireX)
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1000W

    Windows 7 info:

    - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x64
    - the original installed OS on the system? yes...installed from scratch, not an upgrade
    - an OEM or full retail version? full retail
    - OEM = came pre-installed on system no
    - Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer yes

    - What is the age of system (hardware)? GPUs and PSU, six months, all other components, 18 months.
    - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 04/10/2009 (oct 2009)

I have attached two of the last dumps from my C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
I am having a bit of trouble finding the 'BSOD Dump & System File Collection app' which was mentioned in the posting instructions thread however.

Please, feel free to point out any pertinent information that I may have missed.

Any help that you can provide will be greatly appeciated. :)

You have submitted two dump reports. They both show stop 3b.

    Solution
The drivers that you mentioned are unlikely to be the true cause of the BSOD.
Download memtest86 and test RAM https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
    Scan with your Anti Virus
    SFC /scannow
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
    Update outdated listed drivers
    How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
    - - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
    - - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

After performing all of the above, post back with any new BSOD reports, or indicate that the attempted repairs were successful.

Please remember that several attempts may be required before we can solve your BSOD problem. These reports are not definitive but merely point the way to a solution.

OK...I have since updated my graphics driver to catalyst 10.7.

The drivers you identified are as follows:

ElbyCDIO.sys...belongs to Virtual CloneDrive (updated to latest ver)

VClone.sys...also belongs to Virtual CloneDrive (updated)

xusb21.sys...belongs to the Xbox360 controller for Windows (updated)

P17.sys...belongs to Creative SB Audigy sound card (at latest version)

amdxata.sys...Storage Filter driver (AMD) belonging to the 'miniport' group. Not sure how to update this one as it is a Windows file.

    Tosrfhid.sys...TOSHIBA Bluetooth HID driver (updated)

tosporte.sys...TOSHIBA Bluetooth Port Emulation Driver (updated)

pssdk42.sys...Packet Sniffer SDK, most likely used by Networx (internet bandwidth monitoring app) which is at the latest version.

I ran a 6 hour RAM test with Memtest86, and got no errors.

Using the 'sfc /scannow' command actually found some problems, but not all were fixed. Is this normal?

Since all the updates, I tried starting every game from Steam, one after the other, and so far, no BSODs. Lets see how it goes...

Thanks a LOT richc46, for all the info so far.

Your welcome, but lets wait a while. The BSOD reports are not definitive, sometimes it takes several to get rid of the BSOD. But I am crossing my fingers and wishing you good luck.

The sfc finds all file corruption and fixes what it can

So far, so good. I have been able to start, and restart every single game I own from the Steam UI without incident.

How long until we can consider this one solved?

With BSOD there is no definite answer to that. With normal use, I would say about a week.
