Windows stuck at "Welcome" screen

Hi,

I have a laptop which recently Blue Screened. On reboot it will not log in and just hangs on the "welcome" screen after entering my password. I am thinking the profile is maybe corrupt as I can log into the Guest account no problem.

I tried booting in safe mode and it still happens there. There does not seem to be another admin account for me to log into.

I have tried the recovery options and it does not detect any problems. System Restores are also failing.

I tried enabling the administrator account from the recovery command line but the account did not show up.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Boot from the win 7 dvd, while booting hit shift +F10. Then type

net user administrator /active:yes (if my syntax is correct) that will enable the built in hidden administrator account.

Let us know if that doesnt work

When you get to the login screen apart from Guest have you created a user account for yourself with admin rights or do you use the Administrator account that Win 7 creates by default. If that Administrator account does not show on the login screen did you delete it sometime?

The login screen shows 2 accounts. One is the guest account the other is a user account which has admin rights and is the one that sticks at "welcome".

I dont know why the administrator account isnt showing up. It isnt actually my PC but a friends of my father in law so cant vouch for what has actually happened. I would be very surprised if they have the know-how or inclination to remove the administrator account.

I can log into the guest account fine but it does not have admin rights and when it asks me to enter the password for the other account it too freezes up after the password has been entered.

just type in command prompt "net user" alone and click enter... it wil show all the accounts that are active... chek if the system admin account is available or not...
if it doesn't show up....

ten in command prompt type "lusrmgr.msc" and press enter... local user groups will be displayed... check for th admin account and check its properties whether its active or not.. do the necessary changes and try loggin in...

let me knw if there is any issues....

all d best

and if yu say when yu enter the user'a password the screen freezes, it can also be like this... may be the "Sam" file is corrupted.. hence it may be freezing...

so try the "lusrmgr.msc" from command prompt and get into win 7 admin account and delete your old account completely and create a fresh profile.. and hav a try...

Yeah I had planned to log in as administrator, create a new account and copy the files from the old one across and then delete it. I just haven't been able to get in as the administrator yet!

I will try the above suggestions and get back to you. Thanks again.

True but you can bet your bottom dollar that you are not the first person who has had a dabble at this PC. How many times have we all theard that phrase "I know someone who knows all about computers who will fix that for you".
Always very difficult to solve these problems when you don't know what's been done before it came to you!
