Freeze about 5-10 seconds after log in
This issue just started occuring today and it has me completely stumped. As I recall, I don't believe I was doing anything out of the ordinary (browsing youtube and facebook) when my system locked up then restarted after about 20 seconds. After I booted back up to the log in screen, typed in my password, and hit enter. I watched the little windows circle swirl for about 5-10 seconds when it froze again.
Here are the things I've tried so far that have not worked. I booted up into safe mode and tried a system restore point. I tried disabling all the services and booting up normally, which worked but it was basically as good as safe mode so I didn't know where to go from there. I tried disabling all non microsoft services while in safe mode and booting normally but that didn't do anything. I tried running a windows repair from the cd and from the boot menu option and it didn't detect any problems. Finally I got fed up with everything so I fresh installed the operating system over the old partition. It did a first time boot fine, installed updates then prompted the restart. Upon trying to log in after the restart, it froze once again.
My gut feeling tells me it might have something to do with hardware because I don't understand how a fresh install could fail like that but I also don't understand what could possibly cause an error like this. I would really appreciate any help anyone could offer me because I'm flat stumped and frustrated .
