    laptop won't stay on

    Hi all

I am hoping that someone can help me

My son as a HP PAVILLION LAPTOP DV6 / 64 BIT

The problem that he is having is this, when pressing the power button on for it to bootup it don't stay on, what i mean is he presses the power button on and it turns off again, without even booting up, he has taken the battery out and that did not work.......................

My other 2 sons have the same laptop as do i and mine and my other 2 sons are fine

I am going to try a system recovery by setting it back to how it was when he frist got it hopefully and see if that will work............But i won't see him until friday.............

    Hi,

If you have the same charger (which if you have the same laptop then you will :)) then try using the laptop with a known working one as...

if his charger is dead (its not hard for them to die) then the laptop wont work with the power supply as there is no power and the battery won't have any charge.

    Worth a try.

You might also check the laptop cover switch (also called a reed switch) that places the laptop in sleep mode when the cover is closed. Sometimes the switch stays in the closed position keeping the laptop from booting.

If the laptop uses a mechanical switch you should be able to see a small "pin" (usually about the size of a pencil point) on the cover somewheres near the hinge. When the lid is closed the "pin" pushes down on a corresponding switch. Dirt, dust, etc keeps the switch from releasing and popping back up.

A reed switch uses a magnetic contact. Not very easy to find or repair without some fairly major disassembly of the battery compartment and/or keyboard (depending on model.) This is an HP Service and Maintenance Manual. Section 5.10 goes into some detail about accessing the switch cover which may allow access to the reed switch.

Personally, if the laptop is still under warranty I'd suggest having a pro check it out.
