    Unexplained reboots RC7100

    Hi all,

I have been experiencing several reboots. I.e. PC just reboots for no reason. No BSOD is generated (I have set PC not to restart after crash). No mini dump just random reboots (sometimes continuous reboot cycle). I am trying to isolate the reason for this issue but have struggled to do so.

I suspect the issue may be related to my PSU or Mobo but do would like to eliminate Win 7 before I start tearing my machine to bits.

Any assistance offered will be gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance.

From what you describe the PSU is the most likely culprit. Unfortunately the definitive test for this is to try a new PSU. Maybe you can borrow one from another system, or purchase one that you can return?

Also, check for overheating - that'll cause the same symptoms.
Check your event viewer to see what happens in the System log prior to it shutting down.

Also check your power settings to see if the system is set to Sleep or Hibernate. I have this issue - when the computer attempts to sleep, it just shuts down because it can't/won't sleep. I think it's something to do with the power state settings on my mobo (Auto instead of S3) but haven't gotten around to checking it yet.

Thanks. I will source another PSU and let you know.

The only entry in the event viewer was a reference to the previous shutdown being unexpected.

I've seen this happen on an XP machine. At first thought it was a memory issue. It was a PSU. Popped in a new one and worked just like normal.

Update: I seem to have sorted out my problem now. After purchasing another PSU and having the same problem I think I may have suffered from the random sleep issue which seems to be going around! After changing to high performance all issues seem to have disappeared.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
