Windows 7: Dell Studio 1558 - Random reboots

Dell Studio 1558 - Random reboots

Hello

I have a new laptop (about 2 months old):
Dell Studio 1558
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, OEM

From day one I had this annoying problem - the system reboots with no BSOD, while surfing, while using apps or just when idle.
To make a long story short - after chatting with dell, I replaced a faulty hard drive a few days ago, and on the HDD came a freshly installed OS

I only installed Office 2007, and let the computer to run. After 24 hours, while idle, the computer rebooted without any dmp file - only an event "windows did not shut down properly" appeared in the event log
I spoke to Dell once again, and they mentioned something about a motherboard replacement, but they want to send me a tech before taking this step. I really don't want to replace the motherboard, because they are not sure what is the problem and I have a feeling that they will replace it and the problem will persist

I decided to wait, and try, with your help - to identify the problem

I have monitored the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD - no problem there

I ran verifier for 24 hours, and the computer crashed twice - but this time it did leave BSOD and .dmp files. The first crash was while shutting down the computer, and the second crash occured while word + powerpoint were running

The Zip file includes the dmp files zipped while using your BSOD Dump & System File Collection app

Thank You!

Random reboots like that are most often caused by hardware. A bad motherboard could cause that, and PSU is another likely cause.

I did run the dumps, looking for a software cause. The dumps seem to support the notion that your USB mouse is having problems. Could you remove the mouse and see what happens?

Since you don't even have to send your laptop in for repair, I would recommend you just go with the tech. Make a system image, though, in case he decides to wipe your drive.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

It is almost certain bad drivers are not the cause, but just for the heck of it, install some updated ones.

Install these Realtek network adapter drivers: 218.210.127.131/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Install these Dell wireless drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=379431

Thank you for your prompt reply - I will update these 2 drivers

The first crash occured with a mouse connected but no mouse was connected during the second crash.

As for the motherboard - I have a strong feeling that it is not going to solve this issue, and I believe it is going to be a refurbished motherboard - lose lose situation.

It is strange that nothing was connected to the USB during the second crash, and it still crashed while reporting a problem with the hidclass...

DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION (c4)
A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught. This is
because the driver was specified in the registry as being suspect (by the
administrator) and the kernel has enabled substantial checking of this driver.
If the driver attempts to corrupt the system, bugchecks 0xC4, 0xC1 and 0xA will
be among the most commonly seen crashes.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000062, A driver has forgotten to free its pool allocations prior to unloading.
Arg2: fffffa8008bbde98, name of the driver having the issue.
Arg3: fffffa8008ebd690, verifier internal structure with driver information.
Arg4: 0000000000000006, total # of (paged+nonpaged) allocations that weren't freed.
Type !verifier 3 drivername.sys for info on the allocations
that were leaked that caused the bugcheck.

Thank You!

I will update these drivers too and will report back

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Update:

As for most of the drivers that were mentioned - I didn't find newer versions, but I reinstalled some of them

Two of the drivers that I did manage to find were Realtek (through optional Windows update) and the Bluetooth driver (through Dell).

Before updating these two, I have experienced 3 crashes - 2 were related to hidclass.sys, and both occurred right after switching the Wi-Fi off. I believe that the Bluetooth driver is related to the WiFi on/off toggle, and while updating the bluetooth driver I saw that the updated driver included a HID component driver.

As for the first crash - USBHUB.SYS - I believe it had something to do with a faulty mouse.

So now I don't use this mouse anymore, and I hope that the WiFi/Bluetooth updated drivers will do the trick

I re-enabled Verifier, and I'm waiting to see if I will have another crash

Thank you for your help, I will update soon
