Windows 7: BSOD atikmpag.sys

BSOD atikmpag.sys

Windows 7 Professional x64
was running windows xp sp 2
full retail version
system hardware is 2 years old, some items are less than 6 months (hard drive/dvdrw/ps)
Upgraded to Windows 7 2 months ago

Trying to install more ram, every time I go over 3 gig of memory I get the atikmpag.sys bsod just after the splash screen and the system restarts. If I run 3 gig or lower the system starts fine.

Where to start?

1-ASACPI.sys
ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005
Quote:
The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005).

2- Most of these were caused by your video driver.(10 of 15)

Code:
BugCheck 116, {fffffa8007505010, fffff88003a8bf94, 0, 2}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for atikmpag.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for atikmpag.sys
Probably caused by : atikmpag.sys ( atikmpag+6f94 )
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

3-Your Avast needs to be removed and replaced with MSE
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

4-run a system file check

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Steps 1-4 done I didn't have any issues doing any of it. I installed the other ram to put the system from 3 gig to 6 gig and I am still getting the atikmpag.sys bsod just after the splash screen

Thanks. Your latest dump shows ASACPI.sys, dated 2005, is still loading and specifically blames it for the crash. Follow the directions that Ken posted to update this driver. It is an almost guaranteed BSOD maker. The rest of your drivers appear up to date. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and check the date of ASACPI.sys. If the date is not 2009, it needs updating.

I also still see Avast is loading. Avast generally works well with Win 7. However, third party antivirus programs are known to cause BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. While troubleshooting, you might consider uninstalling Avast and installing MSE in its place. You can always install Avast again when you get your system stable.

After you update ASACPI.sys, reboot and run you system. If you still get a BSOD, upload the dump to us. If it is still a video card error, you should test your video card with Furmark following the instructions is this tutorial: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark. Be sure to monitor your temps with Speedfan or CPUZ while testing your video card. However, I agree with Ken that the problem is the ACACPI driver.
