BSOD on Alienware Hello all.
Laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (oem)
System is less than 6months old
Never had to reinstall OS, no prior issues
I've recently been getting these random BSODs on my laptop. It occurs randomly, sometimes during high stress on my cpu/gpu (gaming, etc) and even during low usage (surfing net, etc). I've scoured the internet looking for answers. Almost all the time when I view my dumps, I see the following as a probable cause:
ntoskrnl.exe ( nt+70740 )
I've even read on the Alienware forums that this could be due to overclocking my cpu, of which I have now turned off completely. In safemode, the laptop can run for hours on end with no hiccups. I've run multiple memory scans already (5-8 passes, no issues), dos checkdisks, virus/malware scans, and even device driver verifiers. This has lead me to believe that it could be a driver issue (immediately BSODs after the verifer step and restarts), of which I had to do a system restore. I've retained an old set of Nvidia drivers (197.55) so that I can play a few old school games.
I'm pulling my hair out here. I'm afraid to do anything important on my laptop in fear of randomly losing/corrupting files. Even watching movies off of Netflix has been postponed. Please advise. | My System Specs |

BSODs caused by nvlddmkm.sys, part of Nvidia Drivers Possible causes:bad RAM, incorrect RAM timings/voltages, bad Graphics card, overheating, outdated driver
Uninstall the Nvidia driver then use driver sweeper to remove leftover ATI files Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
Then reinstall the Nvidia drivers NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.99 WHQL
This was likely caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys

To begin your trouble shooting, please uninstall Zone Alarm. ZA is almost guaranteed to cause BSOD's on most Win 7 systems. Use this uninstall tool: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe. Make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.
I looked at your latest four dumps. Error code 7F shows in three of the four. Quote: Error code 7F, UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. Usual causes: Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack
Error code 116, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. Usual causes: Video driver, overheating, bad video card, ?BIOS, ?Power to card. Code: Windows 7 Kernel Version 7600 MP (2 procs) Free x64

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT
Arg2: 0000000080050031

--------- Ialso find another almost guaranteed BSOD maker on your system: Quote: Please uninstall any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dump, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads. Select delete; do not select reinstall. Here is an alternative virtualization program that does not user the sptd.sys driver: Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview
I find outdated drivers loaded on your system. Older drivers can and do cause memory corruption and BSOD's. Update these drivers: facap.sys Wed Sep 24 22:34:31 2008 - faCap WebCam Capture is a driver file from Sensible Vision belonging to faCap WebCam Capture. This software/hardware is obsolete. Uninstall it. RimSerial_AMD64.sys Mon Nov 24 12:01:01 2008 -Virtual Serial Port driver for Blackberry Research In Motion - Products
Uninstall ZA and SPTD.sys, update the above obsolete drivers or uninstall the software they are associated with, reboot and run your system. Let's see how it does.

Uninstall the ATI driver then use driver sweeper to remove leftover ATI files Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
Then reinstall the Nvidia drivers NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.99 WHQL
This was likely caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys

Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR The only reason why I've shied away from using Nvidia Verde driver releases is because they tend to be incompatible with the Alienware M11x notebook. I mean the drivers won't allow me to switch between the onboard Intel integrated graphics and the Nvidia GT335M. This laptop's ability to switch graphics cards on the fly was a big selling point for me.
I've reverted back to the original drivers that came with the notebook for the time being. I never had BSODs back then. But now, 90% of the time I'm not even using the Nvidia card. I'm mostly using integrated now and BSODs still occur. Does anyone know if the Nvidia drivers are still running when I'm using integrated? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alienware M11x R1 OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo SU7300 Motherboard Intel Mobile GS45 Chipset Memory 4GB DDR3 PC3-8500 Graphics Card Intel Integrated / Nvidia Geforce GT335M Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Hard Drives Hitachi 250GB HDD |

Refresh your page and follow the suggestions in my post above. After you do that you can work on the video problem if you are still having it. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit CPU Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Motherboard ASUS P4P800-VM Motherboard Chipset: Intel 865G + ICH5 Memory 2.50 GB RAM Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS Sound Card SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio (Chip) Monitor(s) Displays ViewSonic VX 1962 wm Screen Resolution 1680 X 1050 Keyboard Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v10 USB Mouse Logitec optic USB Cooling Fan based Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80 GB

Thanks for all of the above CarlTR6.
I've uninstalled Zonealarm Pro, Alcohol (sptd.sys) and updated my RIM Blackberry software. Windows Firewall is now on.
Couldn't find the apps for faCap Webcam so I just manually deleted facap.sys from the Drivers folder, as well as RimSerial_AMD64.sys
I'm going to switch to my Nvidia card in a little bit and run up a few demanding apps. Going to test and see if the system will bsod still. Will update if anything 'blue' occurs. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Alienware M11x R1 OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo SU7300 Motherboard Intel Mobile GS45 Chipset Memory 4GB DDR3 PC3-8500 Graphics Card Intel Integrated / Nvidia Geforce GT335M Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Hard Drives Hitachi 250GB HDD |
