BSOD - Help the Amateur!

Hi folks,

I am completely a CPU amateur in terms of CPU speak, techinical terms, etc., so be merciful!

Anyhow, I have Windows 7 Home Premium (not sure which bit version, I'm guessing 64?) on a relatively new-ish HP Pavilion Elite HPE 140f, and as of late, I've gotten that damn screen time and time again.

I leave the computer on pretty much all the time (even if I'm not using it that much), but when I do use it, I can just be surfing normally, music on, whatever, and it crashes with the BSOD. Error reports (I've attached two) are as follows:

I have done nothing radical/new to the cpu, save remove a webcam, and my laptop uses the same router (I just added the laptop to share the same router), and I do have ZoneAlarm (I've had it for months and had no problem until recently).

So, in a nutshell, help! And as I said, be easy on me, I don't understand a lot of the lingo lol.

I apologize if this same error has been reported before, but I need it "dumbed down" to get help.

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the appropriate section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

First of all, I would recommend uninstalling ZoneAlarm as I have heard where it has caused the BSOD.
What AV are you using?
Also, I recommend installing Microsoft Security essentials as it is Free and rated very high.
You should take a look at what programs are starting up when you turn your machine on.
A good program that I have used for years is called StartupInspector and when you run it as
administrator, you can turn off programs that start when you turn on the computer.

Hi guys,

I didn't read the initial post saying upload this and that file (sorry), so I attach the zip file as noted...and I comment as follows:

The step that says: 3). Run a system Health report; I did, and got this message, twice:

Error:

An error occured while attempting to generate the report.

The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out.

...so much for that!

As well:

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? (I'm not sure.)
- the original installed OS on the system? (Original, yes.)
- an OEM or full retail version? OEM.
- OEM = came pre-installed on system
- Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer

- What is the age of system (hardware)? About a year.
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) As above, I have not reinstalled.

Rich gave you good advice. Uninstall Zone Alarm using this tool: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe. Turn on Windows Firewall.

Your three latest dumps are the same error code, 7E, which is consistent with Zone Alarm.

Error code 7E, UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.

I find the following outdated driver on your system.

Hi there!! Thanks for the tips.

I followed the link and deleted ZA (which sucks because I paid probably $50 for this stupid program, I didn't think it'd screw up my cpu!!!), and I went to my Device Manager, found the Atheros thingy listed under "Network Adapters" (Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module), and clicked "update," and the cpu was able to download an update online automatically...here's hoping it all works!

That is great news!! Thanks for reporting back with what you have done. I hope your problem is fixed. Post back in a couple of days and update us. If you are still BSOD free, we will ask the mods to mark this thread as solved.
