As of late, the OS hangs for ~2 minutes at the welcome screen, before proceeding to desktop. I generally understand how to deal with most other hangs, but my understanding is that drivers would have already loaded prior to this screen, and startup programs don't start til afterward...true? The bottom-line is how best to deal with this?

You can try a Clean Boot Troubleshooting method to find which application is causing the problem.

On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

Click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.
After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

I have tried the Startup Repair Utility several times, without improvement. I will try the clean boot, but that eludes my question about startup programs, because I didn't think that they would be loading during that screen...who knows, maybe it will help. Got a movie playing at the moment, so it will have to wait.
No, a clean boot didn't solve it. I still had to watch the cursor spin for a couple of minutes. I just took a look at the available restore points, which only date back to 10-25-2010, and almost all of them were for uninstalls, rather than installs, except a couple that were made after this problem began, so I doubt that any of them would help. Any other ideas?
Have you checked for any windows updates that have been installed recently that may have caused this issue?
Try creating another user account and login with that one then try again to login with admin account to see what happens
Actually, I had to do this in reverse, because I normally log into the administrator account. I also have a user account, that I created back when I first installed W7, primarily as a standby, which I just logged into, and it definitely shrank the welcome window time span (from 2 minutes to 27 seconds).
I know that many believe that the administrator account should not be used for routine purposes, but be that as it may, I do. This user login has served a useful purpose in diagnosis, but what I want it to fix the problem in the admin account and continue using it.
