    Blue screen when switching GPU

I have a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250, which has a Power Saving GPU for battery use and a High Performance GPU for when it's mains powered.

If I am on battery and then plug it in, I get a blue screen as soon as I click to confirm the switch!

If I start the computer while plugged in, windows fails to start!

The computer was fine until a couple of days ago when all of a sudden the screen froze and nothing looked the way it was meant to.
Just before it failed I didn't change anything, or update anything, it seemed to be untriggered.

If you had a recent update from Microsoft which included an update from ATI for your GPU you might want to revert to before that update or at the very least revert to a date when you did not experience a problem.

I don't know if HP is one of the OEM that have updates specific to the GPU's in their laptops but you might want to go to their official website and see if this applies to your specific model.

Going from battery and the low power GPU to power mode and the high end GPU is a problem with quite a few of the laptops out there so don't think it is only you. Best of luck.

I would try a System Restore. Easiest to try first. Won't alter programs or loose data.
If it started two days ago then choose a restore point date/time three days ago.

Just in case you are unfamiliar.

I think I performed a system restore during system repair on startup yesterday - I tried again just now anyway, but got this error message: 010 | Flickr !
Tried disabling anti-virus and firewall and trying an earlier restore point but same error.
Not sure if yesterday's restore worked or not as I couldn't get windows to work to even see an error message (I hadn't worked out the correlation between the power source and the problem at that point).

I have also got a picture of the bluescreen. Hopefully someone may know what the STOP code means?: 005 | Flickr !

Can GPU's burn out or anything, or do you guys think this is simply software/driver related?

    Shaun

System Restore was a shot in the dark. I wasn't sure if you had tried it when I posted earlier.
I'll see if I can get you some additional help.

It could be a driver issue or a hardware one. A couple different people on here have experienced problems with laptops with more than one GPU where the highend GPU stops functioning properly. For the time being I am going to recommend trying to update the drivers for your graphics card. Before installing the new drivers it is recommended that you uninstall the old ones. Follow the link below and it will take you to the drivers page for your notebook. Select the graphics driver and see if there is any change.

Follow this tutorial and upload the resulting files to us. We can look at your mini dump and drivers.

Shaun I requested the thread be moved to Crashes and Debugging so we can get a response from the BSOD team on your files.
    We have been moved.

    Mike

I let CarlTR6 know you have the report up. It appears he may be the only BSOD crew member on line at the moment but he or someone will get to you.

Hi, Shaun; thanks for uploading the files. I looked at your four most recent dumps. All of them blame atikmdag.sys, which is a video driver. It is up to date.

Error code 7E (2X), SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Usual causes: Insufficient disk space, Device driver, Video card, BIOS, Breakpoint with no debugger attached, Hardware incompatibility, Faulty system service, Memory, 3rd party remote control

I find an almost guaranteed BSOD maker on your system, Zone Alarm. Please uninstall all ZoneAlarm components using this removal tool: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe. ZA is a notorious and documented cause of BSOD's on some Win & systems. Are you running two firewalls? Or are you running just the ZA toolbar? I see you are running Windows Firewall. Do not install another third party firewall until you know your system is stable. I urge you to stay with Windows firewall.

After you uninstall ZA, see how your system runs and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload the dump to us and uninstall Avast, which can sometimes cause BSOD's. Generally Avast runs well with Win 7. If you uninstall Avast, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. I would see how my systems does without ZA before uninstalling Avast.

I also suggest that you uninstall Super AntiSpyware until you know that your system is stable. You can install Malwarebytes; it runs very smoothly with Win 7.
