    software or hardware? boot failure

    G'day all

my laptop will no longer boot, blue screen and restarts with options to start normally or run some checks, of whick none work...
the CMD works but i am unsure how to use it..

put in the windows 7 disk ... and can not do a repair or fresh install as there is no disk dive, but part of the partition shows .. as "X Boot"

one of the kids downloaded a liecence.exe to get a movie working ... i suspect this was the virus .. as it did nothing ... untill the laptop was restarted

hard drive shows in bios, what can I do .. what checks or options have i got?

also, could it be a hardware issue? .. still under warrenty ...

    laptop is a asus nv50
    windows 7
4gig ram - ram test was ok

    Cheers

    Welcome to SF, Trologic.

You need to create a bootable antivirus CD.

AVG Rescue Disk – Free AVG Bootable Antivirus CD

ok thanks, but how will this help?

I ran a scan before the reboot and AVG didnt pick up anything
also, there appears to be no drives other than X .. which is very small 3068kb ..

will this do any sort of repair??

    cheers

Ah. You suspected it was a virus, so I was going along with that.

If you have a command prompt, you could run chkdsk c: /r /f

You can also run a System Repair.

    none of those work

checkdisk has the error can not open the volume for direct access
system repair has the messages as below

    system disk = \Device\harddisk0
    windows directory =
    Autochk run = 0
number of root causes = 1

system disk test completed successfully Error code 0x0

    disk faliure test
    error code 0x0

disk metagata test also successfully with error code 0x0

    root cause found ...
system volume on disk is corrupt
    file system repair repair )chkdsk)
    failed error code = 0x1f
    time taken - 0ms

could I remove the drive and put it in a cady .. and repair some other way?

    Cheers
