    randomly unresponsive, then long reboot

I've been trying to track this down, and fix it, since I built this system 5 months ago. Now I'm getting desperate... when all else fails, ask for help.

Problem: every few days, or occasionally twice a day, my system will become very slow. Programs become unresponsive, (even pulling up the task manager), and it takes about 3 minutes for the system to shut down, and another 15-20 minutes for the system to reboot.

I have tried everything I can think of. I have a minimal set of starup items, (just 3 in msconfig; joystick, audio control panel, and IAStorIcon. I have searched through event viewer, and the only indication I get is that windows logoff took an insanely long time to log off. Scannow indicates no problems.

I have turned off dozens and dozens of services, and still I haven't been able to track this down. I've tried manually quitting and restarting expolorer, manually shutting down each service when it gets slow, but invariably when it happens, I'm stuck with a 15-20 minute reboot, instead of 20-30 seconds.

When it reboots, I get a flashing underline, then it sits on the windows startup screen for the next 12-15 minutes, then eventually boots into the desktop and everything is normal again.

I've turned off all power saving features, and have everything running at full power. I've turned off all schedules (as far as I know) of all events that might otherwise run at regular intervals.

When it becomes unresponsive, everything just gets insanely slow, (except mouse movement, which is normal). No, there are no viruses or malware, as it has been happening since Day 1.

It only becomes unresponsive when I'm doing something on the desktop. If I'm in a game, it never happens. I'm running in the windows classic theme and have turned off as much as possible to narrow this down.

    Help!

    Scan with the antivirus
Download and scan with malwarebytes, full scan after updating.
    Let us know
Try in safe mode, see if problem persists, let us know.

No issues on full scan with the anti-virus. No issues on scan with malwarebytes.
Have not yet had the problem running in safe mode.

Attempted the run with the driver verifier, today, and it crashed during bootup,
    http://www3.telus.net/rmuscoby/pics/...D_jcgriff2.zip

However, the mini dump was not from today, (not from the running of the driver verifier).

Still getting random periods of unresponsiveness, followed by a 20 minute reboot.

    Still need help!! What's next??

Mini Kernel Dump does not contain unloaded driver list
Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .. A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress. You can read more on this error and what to try here... Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

I'm not over-clocking, (no need to with this cpu).

I'm not sure what to do next... should I re-run with driver verifier?

The issue happened again, yesterday, and all I was doing was flipping through some digital camera jpegs with Windows Photo Viewer. Suddenly became slow, and it took about 3 minutes to shut down, and 15+ mins to reboot. Once back at the desktop, after the long reboot, everything was back to normal.

Edit: A few minutes after writing this, I attempted to get into event viewer, and it hung, becoming unresponsive, claiming to be waiting for "snap-ins"... Attempted a reboot, had a long shut-down, attempted a "repair installation" on reboot. All tests checked out okay, except the very last one, which said something about "your configuration has changed, so windows cannot repair the install".

    124 is hardware.
    I would do memory test
    Driver verifier
    Then post back.
