    Windows Just Shut Down


    Hi there, I really need help because about 30 minutes ago my laptop just shut down while I was browsing and then when I turned on laptop again, while I was logging on it said 'preparing dextop' and thought it was a bit odd. 5 minutes later my dextop appeared and all my files, everything had gotten deleted. It freaked me out... So I shut down my laptop and went back on using Safe Mode with Networking and guess what, on safe mode my files are still there... So I went to system restore but it said that I cannot perform it since it is switched off but I tried to switch it on but it wouldn't let me for some reason :S

    So what can I do to get my original account restored back to normal? because only my stuff shows up in safe mode but when I log back in normally, everythings gone...

    Just a wild guess here but you may be logged on as a different user for some reason.

    Preparing desktop sounds like a service pack installation has taken place or a repair installation.

    How many user accounts do you show?

    "Preparing your desktop" is only shown when logging in to a new user account first time. User folders are not created when you make a new account, they are instead only created when new user logs in first time. Seeing this text means Windows is creating the folders.

    In your case, seeing this can IMO only mean one of these options: either you were accidentally logging in to a new user you'd created, instead of your normal account, or that your user profile is corrupted.
