Windows 7: New Install, Startup Repair

New Install, Startup Repair

I've just installed windows 7 on a 400 GB SATA drive twice in a row. Each time it installs properly and boots into the desktop for the first time. At this point I rebooted the computer and it was still working.

However, on two consecutive attempts I installed Avira free antivirus and then ran windows update and rebooted. After this both times Windows was broken and just booted to the startup repair utility which could do nothing.

I probably have to reinstall again... what could be causing this? Avira? Windows Update? Installing to a SATA drive while I have a backup IDE drive?

EDIT: I also just tried a system restore before installing the program and it didn't help.
