Won't boot!!??

Last night, I purposely shutdown and somehow before I could kill the UPS it started to boot again. I just killed power (probably bad idea). This morning on booting it stated that it could not boot and a Windows program(?) came up to restore the boot programs. It opened a box as if something was in the DVD drive and exited the box and it began to cycle a repair program. After 15 minutes, I tried to shut it down and it said it could not be shut down. Waited a while longer and then killed power to the box (second bad idea?). When it booted it went right into the regular boot sequence??
I ran sfc /scannow and it said no problems. The machine seems to be running normally, can anyone quess at what occurred and if I am in a problem condition?

hello :) the master boot record must of got corrupted you done the right thing letting windows repairing it, if windows does not notify you of any other problems i should not worry. look in the event viewer to see what went on but im sure its ok. :) remember not to switch of the pc without properly shutting down not only you damage files you damage the disc.

That is good to hear! You've notched down my stress level several steps. I will look if not understand what is in the event viewer and I do try not to shutdown incorrectly.
Sometimes the system gives me no choice. That Boot Repair appeared to be going to run forever. Thanks again.

For future reference, it's best not to interrupt a repair process. You could end up worse off than you were.

I see what you mean. What bothered me is that it came up with the dialog as if I had inserted a disk in the DVD (open folders, etc) then it came up with the dialog of burn to disk, use Imgburn, etc:, so I thought it was loopy.
Can anyone tell me where it is getting the information to restore the files required for booting? There was no DVD in it.

sometimes windows will appear not to be doing anything but let it do its job. if you get any probs im always about on here to help if i can ok

Exceptionally appreciate that! You guys have pulled me out of the abyss several times. Can you tell me where W7 gets the info to repair the corrupted? boot files from as there was no DVD in it although it gave me the pop-up boxes as if there were?

it would be the back-up files from the recovery software i should imagine, did you install the op system or it came installed? if you dont have the windows disc you should have software on there to make recovery discs. which you should make when you first get the machine.

I installed the OS, but did not have the repair disc in the machine at the time. It just seemed to pull it out of nowhere. Confusing me to no end.
