1st RMA completed - still random BSOD

Hello,

This is a follow-up to my original thread here -

I completed 1 RMA with HP and the teleplan service center guys sent me the machine back with the note - no issues found, reloaded OS. This time they loaded the OS with SATA controller as IDE as opposed to the default RAID setting that had come when I had purchased the system.

I let it run overnight hoping for the best but see the BSOD error in morning - I would really appreciate if somebody can pin point the issue so in the next RMA I can advise HP Teleplan guys about it - they seem to not spend great deal of time researching the issue but try to do a quick fix that obviously didn't work.

Your dumps indicate conflicts and memory corruption. Uninstall Symantec using this removal tool: Tool. Many third party security programs create conflicts with Win 7 and Norton is no exception. Norton was involved in one of the crashes. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It will not cause conflicts. Make sure Windows firewall is turned on.

Uninstall or upgrade CyberLink. Its driver, 000.fcl, Fri Sep 26 09:11:22 2008, is out of date. Outdated drivers can and do cause conflicts and BSOD's.

I find another slightly out of date driver loaded on your system. Update this driver from the link provided.

usbfilter.sys Fri Apr 03 07:39:51 2009 - AMD USB Filter Driver (likely part of the chipset drivers). http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx. Update this driver.

Follow these suggestion, reboot and let's see if your system is more stable. Post back and let us know. If you get anohter BSOD, upload it and we will go from there.

I also wanted to highlight something that I am not sure relates to this issue or not. When I had received this system for the 1st time its default setting in BIOS for SATA Controller was RAID. Although I saw the blue screen errors before evening knowing what this setting was for, later during debugging I tried changing this setting to IDE and was consistently seeing the BSOD. I read about this later and realized that during Windows installation it needs to be specified which controller should be used so if Windows was installed with RAID I cannot change it to IDE. I also read about some registry hacks to overcome this but did not attempt them.

When I completed the RMA the teleplan service center guy asked me weather I want RAID or IDE and I advised IDE so this time he installed the OS with SATA controller set as IDE - this is my current BIOS setting. He advised there are no other issues with hardware and sent it back.

Out of curiosity I again tried booting Windows after changing it to RAID and as expected - BSOD. My questions is - is it possible that changing the SATA Controller setting even once in BIOS causes some damage in Windows installation that leads to this intermittent BSODs later ? I feel that shouldn't be the case since BIOS is just directing the OS what driver to look for. So if I later switch back to correct SATA controller settings (in this case IDE) it should function normally and this shouldn't be the cause of the BSODs. I would appreciate if you can advise if my understanding is correct or not. Otherwise I think HP should put it in the manual that "NEVER CHANGE THE SATA CONTROLLER SETTING IN BIOS - DO IT ONCE AND YOU ARE DOOMED"

Also wanted to advise you that this BSOD error occured yesterday night when I had left it to copy 330GB of my data from a WD External Hard drive connect via USB to the front panel USB port of this PC - the copy completed successfully but the time of the BSOD is very close to the time copy may have ended (estimated time remaining when I started copy at 11:00 pm CT was 4 hours and BSOD time is 03:20 am CT). Just trying to provide as much relevant info that could help.

Resetting RAID vs IDE in BIOS should not affect your Windows installation. It may cause crashes; but it should not damage your system. Yes, the current BSOD's are much better than a 124 error code.

This might be caused by the usbfilter.sys filter driver. We will see when you complete your updates.

It's difficult to say. Some users uninstall CCC and install the display driver only. I suggest that you contact AMD's support and ask them about the 785G chipset.
