Strange BSOD & Crash during chkdsk/memory diagnostic

Hi all,

Ive recently had a BSOD-like crash whilst playing a game (Battlefield Bad Company 2), the monitor simply goes black and then flashes up as recieving "no signal". I then had to restart by holding down the power button and on reboot, chkdsk was recommended.

I started chkdsk but then half way through the computer did the same thing again, and crashed. Eventually after trying many times, I skipped chkdsk and then tried system restore which also crashed several times during. However, the system did somehow restore itself and I thought the issue was gone - however, just to check things I tried running windows memory diagnostic tool and it simply will not complete without doing the same thing again, and crashing half way through.

The computer seems useable, It only seems to crash during a game which leads me to think it could be display related but I have updated all my drivers, ran disk defrag, registry cleaner, virus & malware scanners galore and all turn up nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Seems your GPU/RAM is defective as the dump blames a stop 0x124 error which is related to a failing hardware device
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

Code:
BugCheck 124, {0, fffffa8007016708, 0, 0}

Probably caused by : hardware

Thanks for that, Is there any way of telling from the dump files if it is GPU or RAM related?

The only way is to test components

I've just tried to run memtest 86 and after selected the multi-cpu option I get the test screen which sits there doing nothing for about 3-4 mins and then i get the same crash all over again - pc hums like its restarting and the monitor loses signal from the pc.

On the one hand Im thinking its probably GPU related as the crashes only occur when Im displaying something (a game or a dvd) and I can leave the pc just on desktop all day without any issue.

However, would a faulty gpu explain why chkdsk and memcheck crash?

I'm a relative newb to all this as im sure you can tell...

* Also, if i disable my GPU in device manager and then try chkdsk or memtest will they still automatically check the GPU memory?
