    Hey All

I am having the same issue with this WINDOWS Explorer finding a problem and restarting continuously. I can operate the PC in a rudimentary way by using the task manager to kill the explorer process and then start a cmd prompt. However anything that involves browsing for a file in a directory (inlcuding some of the control panel tools) fires up windows explorer which then dies with the same error !

This started occuring on 15 Feb 2010. A couple of windows updates were automatically downloaded and applied over the preceeding few days which is the only thing that changed... I think on the 12th there was a bunch of 7 updates and then on 13th or 14th another one. Perhaps my bug is a valentines gift from MS ??haha

So far I have tried a number of things, including registry cleaning, CMF scan, starting in safe mode and restoring to restore points. Nothing has any effect.

Anyway I am just considering doing a repair install and then if that does not work a clean install. Before that I will also try out the free recommended registry fixup program linked from this thread.

The clean install is probably a good option as its a secondhand PC (less than 1 year old and good spec gear) and the previous owner seems to have been keen on loading all sorts of stuff. I will update my profile with PC details when I get home but its a Core 2 Quad processor - I think 2.33 gHz. 4G DDR3 ram. Asus motherboard (forget which) with NVIDIA video card. Previous owner was a gamer who works in a PC store

However here is my question (finally !) - I have a couple of older software packages that I am used to for processing photos and running my Sony HDD walkman. I'd rather not find alternatives (I can't for the Sony one) however I am not sure if there are any issues with these programs that could have clashed with the recent updates and if I should reinstall them or not

    Programs are

    Sony Sonicstage 4.3
    Nikon Picture Perfect 1.5

I did do a bit of internet search about these before installing. Sony one is reported to be okay for Vista/Win7. Nothing I could find about Picture Perfect and Win7 issues.

When installing PP windows told me it needed to run in compatible mode and I accepted without too much thought (opps). Prior to the windows explorer issue PP did crash 3 or 4 times which it had not done before. I think this may have been an early symptom of the windows explorer issue rather than the cause tho...

    Cheers
    Marcus

Download ShellExView and have a look what context menu entries are most likely causing this issue.

Are you using Norton Security Suite ?

If yes uninstall it and instal Microsoft Security Essentials instead and all will be fine.

If no then try to reset IE to default.
