Get's to the "Welcome" part of the boot then BSOD. No safe mode either
Friend/client's laptop.
Dell Inspiron 1525.
Windows 7 Home basic.
x64 (I believe - unconfirmed).
From what my mate explains he got fooled by a spoof website claiming he needed to "defragment" his drive. He obviously followed a few too many prompts and got infected.
The problem I now have is ever time we turn the lappy on it goes through the initial booting of windows then gets to the "Welcome" screen (right before it would usually load the desktop). It then pops up a BSOD, does it's dump then reboots. If left alone it will do this indefinitely.
Loading in safe mode has the same result.
The BSOD error code is:
and can be seen here:Code:STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x820836B3, 0xAE19FB24, 0x00000000)

I don't care to repair the Windows partition particularly. I just want to recover some important files before formatting.
I tried Hiren's Boot CD and an XP MiniPE live CD to try copying the files to an external HDD but the C:\ drive didn't even show up in either application.
From my research the error code points to a corrupt MBR. So I got into repair mode with my Win7 CD and tried:
Neither helped.Code:X:\Sources bootsext.exe /fixmbr as well as Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
Any suggestions?
Thanks heaps guys.
