Had virus C drive not booting

My father in law got yet again another virus off of facebook. I told him to shut it down I would look at it in the morning. From what I heard it was the kind that acted like an antivirus program and tried to make him buy it. Well this morning when I booted the pc up a white bar just flickers in the top left hand corner and thats all that it does. A couple years ago I put a new hard drive in as a spare and it was formatted for windows xp like this one is. I booted too it install malware bytes and ran a full scan on both ahrd drives there was 10 instances of infection cleaned them up rebooted computer still same problem. DO you guys know a way to fix it I dont really want to reformar his c drive that has all his info in it thats not backed up. Also when i push recovery it gives me the same blinking white bar. Also when I boot to the other disc drive and windows xp loads it still reads both hard drives and both recovery drives.

Can't you backup his files with the XP system and then reinstall the system? With that much infection history that is probably the fastest fix. Someone who visits shady sites (and facebook is shady), should make a system image every day so that he can get out of a predicament like this in 20 minutes.

Maybe you want to set this up for him and set an automatic schedule each day or every second day or whatever. I would image to an external disk, but the XP disk may have enough room for it too. When I jump get on the other xp thats working I click into the other hard drive most of the files are not there. I dont know If i would even get any thing out of back up.

Unfortunately if you want to save any data that you no longer see on a hard drive that will require EXTENSIVE Recovery work.

As suggested best thing to do with an infection of that Magnitude is to reformat back up as much as you possibly can.

There is recovery type software you can buy its expensive also people that will do it again expensive. You can however run a scanner on the drive to test it. To see if the drive itself is bad. Probably worth doing before you format and waste time on a drive that could be going bad to begin with.

Hmm, I wonder what happened to those files. I would double check with a live Linux distro - if you have one on hand. If not, use this one: Computer First Aid Using Knoppix It is pretty old but it works.

Indeed you have some strange things going on, ill admit that! What kinda drives are these? Brand and Connection type?

Both hard drives are sata connection the one that is set up in the third channel ? is the one that is nto working and it is a st3250823as and the one that is set up in the fifth channel ? again wd2500ks-00mjbo

Try booting up (with your other drive) and running this tool on the bad drive.

SeaTools | Seagate

Its a diagnostics tool to test for bad head etc. Drives are mechanical so they do fail. I know it got attacked by a virus but it could very well be a bad drive also.

Isnt that what a smart test does I ran a smart test from the boot settings and said it was ok no errors. I cant run the test ethier kinda got into a fight with my wife about a new computer problem per week and she took the computer and stormed off. Im not sure if ill be seeing it tonight...

LOL well then thats no good hah But the smart test is good but it isnt quite extensive as sea test.

Yeah I just told them I will reformat there hard drive. After that I am going to find their external (god knows where thats at) then I will make a schedule back up. Its simply amazing how often they get infected with virus's and there all from facebook. I have avast and malware bytes on their computer because those are the two that are free and in my opinion work just as well as any other combo. It baffles me how one person can keep making the same mistakes.

Facebook is fine, long as you dont start clicking things your unsure about lol (like alot of people do) But yeah honestly thats probably the best thing to do. But do make a scheduled backup for future occurrences

LoL yep that'll sure do it.. Lots of users dont know how important anti virus, firewall, anti malware are. I even used to be one.

Fact is lots of users turn off their protection because it seems to bog down their computer. But you should never turn off any of your protection unless your not connected to the internet.

I agree if you dont want your computer bogged down upgrade your specs its alot less expensive then replacing loss data or buying a whole new computer.

Yep, In my opinion if your going to be on the internet and dont have a suitable computer that will run some good protection software you shouldn't be on the internet. But i understand everyone isn't made of money but this is 2011 software has come along way, computer prices have went down. Should not be a problem anymore!
