    BSOD after sleep and USB-breakdown

    Hello everyone,

After trying everything I could think of, I was hoping you guys here could help me with a very annoying BSOD problem.

The problem only occurs after trying to get Windows 7 to sleep. Sometimes it works without any problem, but most of the time the screen goes black but the fans keep spinning. As far as I can see there is no actual CPU or HDD activity. And after about 10-15 minutes of being in this weird state, the computer finally shuts down. But when I try to wake it, instead it reboots and gives me a nice BSOD-message on reaching the desktop.

After Googling this seemingly widespread problem I have tried everything other people were advised: disabled media sharing in WMP, set the right energy settings and such. However, the problem persists.

The WhoCrashed report isn't helping me very much either:

On Tue 11-1-2011 17:05:35 GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\011111-31715-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntkrnlpa.exe (nt+0xDCD10)
    Bugcheck code: 0x9F (0x3, 0xFFFFFFFF87B8A030, 0xFFFFFFFF82F29AE0, 0xFFFFFFFF85CA0D08)
    Error: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver which cannot be identified at this time.

On Tue 11-1-2011 17:05:35 GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntkrpamp.exe (nt!KeBugCheckEx+0x1E)
    Bugcheck code: 0x9F (0x3, 0xFFFFFFFF87B8A030, 0xFFFFFFFF82F29AE0, 0xFFFFFFFF85CA0D08)

Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: ntkrpamp.exe .
    Google query: ntkrpamp.exe DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

So, I'm hoping someone here could make anything of this?

    System info:
Windows 7 professional 32bit (full retail, clean install). The age of my hardware varies greatly. However, the main portion of my computer would be about two years old.

Maybe somewhat of a hint to the cause of this problem, might be the fact that the BSOD occurs every time when for some mysterious reason the USB devices stop working. That is, my WiFi-adapter gradually loses speed (though no weakening of the connection is displayed), until the internet connection is completely gone. Any USB device plugged after this won't work, including the adapter itself. The only USB devices that continue to work are my mouse and keyboard.

I hope you guys have any idea what is causing this mess!

Hi, Matt and welcome to the forum. Your dump shows a USB failure and indicates a driver problem. It blames WUSB300Nx86.sys, unknown USB WiFi driver. More information on this driver below. I see several other potential causes. You need to eliminate all potential causes.

To begin, I recommend that you uninstall Daemon Tools. It uses a driver, found in your dump, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads. Select uninstall; do NOT select reinstall.

Here is a free alternative CD virtualization program that does not use the sptd.sys driver.
    Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview

Here is another almost guaranteed BSOD maker.
    Code:
      ASACPI.sys Thu Aug 12 22:52:52 2004
The 2004 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt

Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
    Download and install it.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2004).

I also see out of dated drivers loaded on your system. Outdated drivers can and do cause conflicts and BSOD's. Those in red font are quite obsolete. Update these drivers through the links provided.

    Support and Services.
       Note
Renaming drivers: create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files, and rename them from .sys to .old. Reboot and the drivers will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware these drivers are associated with.

    How to find drivers -
    - I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box above. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
    - search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

    - - The most common drivers are listed on this page:
    Driver Reference
    - - Driver manufacturer links are on this page:
    Drivers and Downloads.

Follow all of the above suggestion, reboot and see how your system does. Please post back and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will go from there.
