Please help! Windows stops working after update.

Okay, I would first like to thank anyone who are willing to give their help on this matter, i really appreciate it.

Okay so here is the story...

I bought my HP envy 15 around christmas 2009.

around year later (3 days after the warrenty ended) i dropped my computer on the floor for the first time, and the harddrive got damaged.

i replaced the harddrive, and ever since, its been acting weird.

I installed windows 7 from my flash drive, and entered my key from underneath my computer, and windows said it was genuine, i thought everything was gonna be just fine from there.

around 2 weeks later, windows updater told me to restart, so i did.

when i then afterwards tried to boot up the computer, i got a bsod. I am sorry that i cant post the detailed details about the bsod, but i dont really understand how the program works, and i dont really think i can get it.

the bluescreen said SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and the error code was 0x0000003B.

it kept giving me this bsod everytime i tried to boot, even in safe mode.

not even the windows repair thing could fix it, not even a system restore to a WAY earlier point fixed it.

I had no clue how to fix this, so i thought to myself, oh whatever, i installed windows 7 again, and started over.

windows worked fine for a week.

and now yesterday, my computer started giving me bsod on startup AGAIN, except this time slightly different.

-the bsod was on for only like half a second, so i couldnt get a look at the error information.

-the windows startup repair thing, didnt even want to start, i could just see the curser, nothing else.

i then installed windows 7 again, but this time it took FOREVER, it took 1 hour to get through the process, while it had taken 10 minutes the previous time. windows was just being really slow.

now windows is acting slightly weird on startup, sometimes it just stays at "starting windows" and sometimes it just stays at a black screen, when it does this, i just hold down the power button, and start it agian, then it works fine.

can someone please help me with this issue? I would be so grateful.

Basic Information

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? : x64
- the original installed OS on the system? : Windows 7 home premium (with some extra Hp stuff)
- an OEM or full retail version? : It was OEM when i got it, but when i replaced my hard drive, i installed a trial version of windows 7 from an iso file. then put in my cd key.

- What is the age of system (hardware)? : Around 1 year.
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) : Yesterday

Im sorry to have missed the steps that i needed to take, before posting, i was kind of rushing.

I am not too sure about what you mean with step 2?

I downloaded the program in step one, what am i supposed to do then?

I am working on step number 3, i will update this post once done, thank you for your help so far.

CPU-Z:

1. Run it
2. Go to memory tab, take a screenshot
3. Go to SPD tab, take a scrernshot
4. Attach your screenshots

HDD Scan : run S.M.A.R.T. report. See if it detects any red mark warnings or a few yellow ones.

CPU-z is a little program that will display info about your CPU and memory.

Get it here:

The program you downloaded in step 1 is probably a hard drive diagnostic program to see if your hard drive is working well. You have to run the program to get the result.

How did you diagnose that the hard drive was damaged when you dropped the computer? How do you know whether the damage was limited to the hard drive???

Have you updated drivers for all of your hardware???

I don't know how to properly interpret the hard drive scan info in your picture, but since you have a new hard drive, it would not be my first guess as to what is wrong.

That is a Seagate hard drive. You could download Seagate's own hard drive diagnostic tool here:

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

It will probably give you a more sensible answer about your hard drive health.

@scharz,

the RAM looks Ok, thank you for attaching. The hard disk looks faulty. Check if the connections are tight, and try another hard disk.
