    BSODS while gaming

    Hi all

I've been getting irregular BSODs while playing BC2. Sometimes I can play for 3 hours - sometimes only 2 mins. Seems to crash quicker when I up the GFX to High. It has also crashed the same way on CIV V.

I've ran a SFC /scannow and it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix all of them. Details are included in the CBS.log ......"

    I've tried:
    • installing up to date drivers
    • formatting and upgrading from win XP Pro to Win 7 ultimate x64
    • upgrading case and cooling
    • new sound card
    • memtests
After reset, I often get a window coming up giving me details about a Locale ID 2057 and a Code 124. It is asking me to "find a solution" but when I click it, it time bars for a few seconds and just disappears.

I've read that the 124 is an unknown hardware fault.

Can anyone help here? Is it hardware? If so which part?

    Hi ElmerFud

All your .dmp files are showing this error:

    STOP 0x00000124: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
    Usual causes:
Hardware, Incompatibility, May be driver corruption

You're getting a stop0x124, which means blame the hardware. See: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try for guidance.

I will now look through your dump files for outdated drivers which will not help your issue.

Thanks for your reply and your time Fimble.

I've gone into the settings file in BC2 and changed the direct X parameter to DX10 instead of DX9 and it made it worse. It crashes on the main menu before I even get into a game. I've reverted back to DX9 and I get into the game but it is still BSODing.

Does this shed any light on the issue? Would this rule out a hardware fault? Perhaps beacuse of a change in the DirectX engine?

In my opinion, changing the Direct X settings wouldn't make any difference to your stop errors. I'd hope to be wrong though, its the cheapest option!

Some tests to run:Post new dump files as they happen (you can delete the older ones).

Does the system only crash when playing games? If so this is either a gfx driver problem and or heat issue.

Fimble - Changing the game to DX10 made it crash on the main menu whereas with DX9 I can get in to the game. Played for 2 hours before crashing today.

Anthony - The system only crashes during playing games. Otherwise the system runs fine, however, I have noticed on some web pages, as I scroll down the screen jerks. It doesn't do this all the time. The kind of jerking you get when you've installed your new graphics card and haven't loaded your drivers yet - you know what I mean?

I'm a bit confused now!! I don't see any ATI drivers in your dump files!
But it is good news that it only occurs when gaming.

I've tried the Furmark stress test. everything went ok with no crash. Temp never went above 75°c.

I've done the memtest86+ before and didn't have any problems.
I've used Hot CPU Pro and had no problems.
I've ran chkdisk /r but there aren't any problems.

So why would there not be any ATI drivers listed?

    Latest dump attached.
    Thanks

    Mark Hi and welcome

The first and most important thing I see is the 2005 version of ASACPI.SYS. This is a known cause of BSOD's. You should remove that first to see if they continue.

    ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005
The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
    Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005).
Hardware BC are notoriously difficult but after removing ASACPI we should be able to narrow our focus

Let us know if you need further assistance.

That's the bit that's confusing me!! Possibly not installed correctly?
Your dump files, in fact, only show Windows system drivers. There are no 3rd party drivers installed (according to dump files) on your system. E.G. A vanilla set up, no AV, no Graphics, no Sound, Nada.

Download a new set of Catalyst drivers. Download Driver Sweeper.

Reboot to Safe Mode. Uninstall present Catalyst drivers, run Driver Sweeper to clean up, install new Catalyst drivers, Reboot.
