Windows 7: Frequent BSOD

22 Jan 2011   #1

Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

Frequent BSOD

I am getting several BSOD crashes weekly. Sometimes it happens consistently in the same day for about 1/2 hour to 1 hour. As directed, I have attached the necessary information.

I am running Windows 7 Premium Home -
64 bit OS
Vista was the original OEM
This is an update to Vista (I bought my laptop in Sept 2009, and HP was providing free upgrades to Windows 7 when it was available. Received the upgrade in Dec 2009)
Age of hardware - Built sometime in 2009 (I purchased new in Sept)
OS has been reinstalled twice

I appreciate any help you can give.

Can anyone help me? I have since trying to do a restore, but it keeps saying it failed. HP is not being helpful because it is out of warranty.

Please, can someone help me? Hewlett Packard is not helping as my computer is out of warranty. I had to buy a netbook just to get my work and school stuff done.

I really appreciate the help.

windows 7 ultimate

Hi terripawl and Welcome.

STOP 0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Usual causes:
Insufficient disk space, Device driver, Video card, BIOS, Breakpoint with no debugger attached, Hardware incompatibility, Faulty system service, Memory, 3rd party remote control,

Your dump file blames various Windows System files and they are highly unlikely to be the cause.
Old and incompatible drives can and do cause issues with Windows 7.

As a Priority:

Avast has been known to be the cause of BSOD's on some Win 7 systems.
Uninstall Avast using the Avast ASW Clear Tool until your issue is resolved. Download Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement. Make sure Windows firewall is enabled!

Your latest dump file uploaded is blamed on your graphics card driver. I suggest you reload them as below.
Catalyst v11.1.
Driver Sweeper.
Boot to Safe Mode
Uninstall current Catalyst set up.
Run Driver Sweeper to clean up any left overs.
Install your new Catalyst set up.
Reboot to Normal Mode.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: ffffffffc0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: fffff880040680c7, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: fffff880057db9e8, Exception Record Address
Arg4: fffff880057db250, Context Record Address

Thanks. I just found out from a friend that it appears when I did the upgrade it left Vista on there and thus caused multiple failures. I am now unable to get the computer to boot up at all and I am not able to do a system restore either. I keep getting an error that the recovery did not work. HP said I have to order recovery disks for $12.00 so that I can re-install the original Vista sofrware. Is there any other way I can restore the computer?
