Alas... another crash today. Here is my latest batch of BSOD information. If it helps, at least the BSOD are less frequent now. Last time I made it almost a week and this time I made it 3 days. I just hope if it is hardware failing me it isn't someone major and expensive.

Edit: Oops! Didn't mean to post yet, will post again once the BSOD information thing is finished making its folder and I zip it up and upload it.

    STOP 0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
    Usual causes:
Disk corruption, insufficient physical memory, Device driver, Indexing, Resident antivirus, backup, defrag programs, Disk/Drive failing/failure.

Your latest dump file lists Ntfs.sys as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.

Many third party security programs can cause problems with Windows 7 due to its inbuilt file protection.
For now, I'd suggest removing your Avast and the Comodo firewall and see if your system becomes more stable. Once your system is running AOK you can try them out again. We need to eliminate all possibilities though.
Uninstall Avast using the Avast ASW Clear Tool. Download BSOD friendly Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement.
After removing Comodo make sure Windows firewall is enabled.

    Outdated Drivers. Update:

mcdbus.sys Tue Feb 24 10:34:07 2009 MagicISO SCSI Host Controller driver. MagicISO. Now this one is supposed to be safe. But after I downloaded and installed this to check the driver dates, I had my first unforced blue screen since this set up was installed nine months ago. Suggest to uninstall.
I've used DVDFab. as my virtual drive for the past two years without a problem.

After all that if you still get BSOD's you'll need to start testing your hardware. Start with Memtest86+.
Run Memtest86+ overnight, after your computer has been off for about an hour or two so it has a cold start. Let it run for at least 7 passes / 6-8 hours. If errors appear before that you can stop that particular test.
Note!! Any time Memtest86+ reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad Mobo slot. Test RAM sticks individually. When you find a good one then test it in all slots. Post back with the results.Bugcheck Analysis

I meant to say to check your hard drive(s) before RAM!
    Run Chkdsk
Run the correct Hard Drive Diagnostics Tool for your HDD.

Thanks! I will do everything you suggested, one at a time to see how it goes... but what order do you suggest I try them in? This is the list I have at the moment:

    • Replace MagicISO
    • Remove Avast
    • Remove Comodo
    • Do another Chkdsk (I ran it once before I did the first post in this thread and it found nothing)
    • Do MemTest86+ one stick at a time

Add your Hardware diag tool to the chdsk item. Present order's pretty good. With regards RAM. You're using the default settings I'm assuming? (no overclock etc.)

Ok, I'll get on it in the next few days when I have time.

I still can't help but feel like the fact that this only happens during startup, and only once when I first turn my computer on is a hint at something. It is happening before any antivirus or firewalls have a chance to load, after all, before I even get to the desktop... and even then, only once. I can restart and there is no problem.

That's sort of telling me its a RAM issue. Once its warmed through a little bit, then off it runs!
Just thinking if its a software/driver problem, its easier on the pocket.

Ok, I have an update. I finally had the time yesterday to give the inside of my computer a thorough cleaning, using compressed air and and anti-static bracelet to make sure I couldn't ruin anything. I then specifically made sure every stick of ram was clean and removed three of the four memory sticks.

I spent today running MemTest86(plus). I ran it for 6-8 passes on the first three sticks, one at a time. The fourth stick however, has been causing me trouble. The computer would refuse to boot up 90% of the time when that was the only stick in the slots. A couple times it made it into the Bios, but froze up inside. Once I managed to get memtest running, but it apparently froze 2% into the test - despite the plus sign continuing to blink on the screen. I then put Stick 4 into my second memory slot and put one of the sticks that tested out ok in the first one, and the bios and everything loads fine and I now have MemTest running on the two sticks.

I just started the test, so it hasn't given me any errors yet, but is this a pretty good sign that the fourth stick of RAM has gone bad on me?

(Writing from my wife's Mac, which is why I can't find the plus symbol on this dinky keyboard)

Another update, memtest didn't find anything wrong with the last stick of memory, but I have removed it and will see if the problems come back. Today it booted up without a BSOD, so let's see if it holds.

Out of curiosity, if it IS this memory stick that was causing me trouble, can I replace it with a stick from a different company? The company that made my original RAM is apparently gone, but I can find other sticks for sale at the same speed and size as the originals from other vendors.
