BSOD when quiting games Every once in a while (about 1 out of 4 times) I get a blue screen when quiting games (no matter the game).
Got Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, fresh install and the nvidia video driver was the one recommended on their site. Any ideas?
Attached the archived dump file, please tell me if you need anything else. | My System Specs |

Hello,
I would first remove AVG. AVG is a known cause of BSOD and same as third-party anti-virus. Once you have removed AVG, use this removal tool: AVG - Download tools
Use Microsoft Security Essentials as replacement: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Uninstall Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%. They use a file sptd.sys, which is notorious for BSOD. Once you have removed it, use this SPTD uninstaller: http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads. Select Uninstall, DO NOT SELECT REINSTALL. Code: *******************************************************************************

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 82ce0f21, The address that the exception occurred at

Ok guys, so far so good, I uninstalled AVG with the uninstall tool and tried out about 10 times or so to quit games and no BSODs so far so I guess AVG really was the culprit here.
Later edit: it happened again, this time when updating a game (Heroes of Newerth). Must add that it never game me a blue screen before when updating it. I've attached the dump files, any ideas?

STOP 0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (go to top of page)
Usual causes: Insufficient disk space, Device driver, Video card, BIOS, Breakpoint in startup without having a debugger attached, Hardware incompatibility, Faulty system service, 3rd party remote control, Memory.
spldr.sys Mon May 11 17:13:47 2009 Daemon Tools and SPTD.SYS are still installed.
The sptd.sys driver is notorious for causing BSOD's with Windows 7. It's used by Daemon Tools /Alcohol 120 which will also have to be uninstalled.
Then use the correct (either 32bit or 64bit) download from Duplex Secure to uninstall in Safe Mode.
Make sure to select uninstall!
Some alternatives to DT/Alcohol that do not use SPTD.SYS DVDFab MagicDisc PowerISO (The program is a trial but the drive emulation is free forever).

Arg2: 82cd8f21, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: ad107a94, Trap Frame

Ok, it crashed with a BSOD again, this time when quiting Starcraft 2 after a multiplayer game.
What I did since the last time:
- Uninstalled Daemon Tools with the Duplex Secure uninstall tool. Wasn't able to run it in safe mode (the uninstall option was greyed out) as the driver's not used in safe mode (I think). It uninstalled ok (uninstalled the program from Control Panel afterwards) and I got PowerISO as a replacement.
- Upgraded the video drivers.
- Removed AVG and installed Avast Free edition instead.
- Installed the Rainmeter desktop customization tool (eats about 1% of the total RAM memory) and RocketDock (a taskbar, eats about 10 MB of RAM).
As a note, a friend took a look at the minidump and said that the culprit could be cdd.dll (\System32\cdd.dll) that belongs to IrfanView but I never installed it. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit CPU Intel i3- 330M Memory 3 GB DDR3 Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GT 420M |

This last one was caused by a memory exception by cdd.dll which is the Canonical Display driver part of the OS
I would run a system file check to verify and repair it and other OS ifles. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker Code:

This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

Ok, ran it, didn't find any errors.
Gonna do a lot of heavy testing, see if it occurs again and how often and trying to see if disabling desktop composition can have any effect.
As a side note, it happens less often then it did the first time I posted.
Will keep updated. Thanks.
Update: Ok, it did it again, this time I wasn't even running a game. Here's the mini dump attached.

Read Zigzag3143's post - dump still blames Windows core file (very unlikely to be the cause).
Please run Driver Verifier (it will find the faulty driver) (see note below)... Quote: Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.
So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).
In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .
Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next" NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.
Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).
Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have to see about fixing the registry entry off-line: Quote: Code: Delete these registry keys (works in XP, Vista, Windows 7) Code: :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\VerifyDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\VerifyDriverLevel

This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
