    BSOD after sleep/hibernate

I upgraded Vista to 7 Home Premium 32bit 6 months ago on a Sony Vaio 'All In One' VGC-LV1S bought around 18 moths ago, and started getting the occasional BSOD after resuming from sleep or hibernate. It now happens every time. None of the device drivers are showing problems following the BSOD shut down and reboot.

Would be grateful for some help. Minidump zip attached and includes performance monitor (which says I don't have anti-virus but I'm actually running Kaspersky IS 2011 without any problems).

    Hi Glebe and Welcome.

The five latest dump files all give a stop error 0x44. They also blame various system files which is highly unlkely.

    STOP 0x00000044: MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS
    Usual causes:
Device driver(s). This indicates that a driver has tried to requested an IRP be completed that is already complete.

Outdated drivers can and do cause problems.

As a rule of thumb, the date for third party drivers to be compatible with Windows 7 is 13 July 2009. Windows 7 is a new operating system. It bears no relation to XP.
Hardware and software designed for XP will not run on Windows 7 unless the Mfr's have updated them to be compatible. Many Mfr's choose not to spend time and money writing new drivers which you download for free. They live better by selling new software and hardware.
Check all your software and hardware that you used on XP. Upgrade the software and hardware to a date preferably post 13 July 2009. If you can't update then you should uninstall and replace it.

When the driver issues are sorted, if problems persist, attach new dump files to a post and we'll take it from there.

Hi Fimble, and thanks for the quick resonse. I've been updating drivers (where I can find them) and finished the last one today. Then put it to sleep, woke it up 10sec later to be met by the dreaded BSOD.

From your list, I've updated Aver Media, Intel Network, Intel ME, RIM Blackberry, Ricoh and Realtek. I've uninstalled SonicStudio (PxHelp) and WinDVD (regi), while Rawdisk is reported as being OK for Win7. It's only the 2 Sony drivers I can't seem to sort.

If I hibernate overnight, something wakes it up and causes a BSOD because when I wake it up in the morning it shows the unexpected shutdown message - then shuts down with another BSOD. But there's never a problem with bootup.

Note also that I upgraded to Win7 from Vista not XP, so no need for a clean install. I ran the upgrade check with no apparent issues.

    Any ideas?

Your .dmp file is blaming k11.sys (Kaspersky Antivirus) as the cause of your crash ... Uninstall Kaspersky with this tool, and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials for testing purposes, and see if it clears up your BSOD problems..

Many thanks, Tews. Done, and so far so good. One sleep and one hibernate with no problems. I'll do an overnighter before breathing more easily.

Is there a general opinion on whether or not MS Secrity Essentials is a viable long term antivirus option?

    Hi Glebe.

Your dump file stop error 0x44 blames Device Drivers.

    STOP 0x00000044: MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS
    Usual causes:
    Device driver(s)

As well as Tews excellent advice, I've spotted another (OK, I missed it 1st time round!) very old driver that you should update.

    nvlddmkm.sys Sat Jul 18 18:34:43 2009 nVidia Graphics Driver.

The updates for RIM Blackberry and Ricoh are showing the same driver dates. That may be as late as they go. (At the moment.)
The PxPxHelp20.sys driver is still loading. If you've uninstalled SonicStudio I suggest to rename it. When your blue screens have cleared for a while it would then be safe to delete.
You can disable drivers through the Device Manager or by renaming them.
Renaming drivers: Create a System Restore Point. GoTo C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files and rename them from .sys to .old.
Reboot and the drivers will not load. This also breaks the software or hardware these drivers are associated with.
I wasn't implying you upgraded from XP, just trying to point out that older drivers have a very good chance of not being compatible with Windows 7.
But now you've mentioned it... A clean install is far better than an uppgade install (it can be done with the upgrade media). A lot say that an upgrade install from Vista to Windows 7 is a time bomb waiting to happen, stability wise.

    MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS (44)
A driver has requested that an IRP be completed (IoCompleteRequest()), but
the packet has already been completed. This is a tough bug to find because
the easiest case, a driver actually attempted to complete its own packet
twice, is generally not what happened. Rather, two separate drivers each
believe that they own the packet, and each attempts to complete it. The
first actually works, and the second fails. Tracking down which drivers
in the system actually did this is difficult, generally because the trails
of the first driver have been covered by the second. However, the driver
stack for the current request can be found by examining the DeviceObject
fields in each of the stack locations.

Arg1: 86896c20, Address of the IRP

Thanks everyone for advice on MS SE. I'll give it a go.

Thanks Fimble for the follow up. The nVidia Driver is up to date (verified by Sony who issue their own Win7 version for my Sony Vaio, confirmed by nVidia) and I can't find a direct update for nvlddmkm.sys - it's not part of the aforementioned driver package. Main RIM and Ricoh driver dates are post 13/7/09 so not sure about the old ones in the list. PxHelp20 is renamed and there's no obvious problem on reboot. And misunderstood you on the XP issue - apologies. Re the upgrade, there's so much preinstalled software that it's a real pain to do a clean install, so for now I'll just keep hoping the bomb doesn't explode.

Another couple of sleeps/wake ups without a BSOD so fingers crossed.
